Generation history

Volvo XC90 generations and next redesign.

The Volvo XC90 has been through 2 generations, starting in 2002 and 2015. The gaps were 13 years, an average of 13.0. Some of those waits were long. The current generation began in 2015. On that cadence the next full redesign points to 2027 through 2029, centered on 2028. This is a projection. It comes from the model's own past redesign years, not from the manufacturer. A mid-cycle refresh usually lands in between. Public records describe the current generation this way: In May 2012 Volvo announced that the second generation XC90 would go into production in late 2014, unveiled to the public in Stockholm on August 26, 2014, with orders being taken in 2014 and the vehicle officially going on sale in 2015. Specifications, trims and the NHTSA safety record are on the Volvo XC90 model page.
