Body, water and noise: 10 decision guides.
Locate water entry, wind noise, rattles, odors, liftgate faults, corrosion and cabin exhaust intrusion. The body, water and noise desk holds 10 of the site's 126 ownership guides: 2 rated stop driving, 7 rated soon, 1 rated routine. A reader in a hurry can jump straight to the escalation rule. One with more time can work through the evidence first, because each guide follows the same five-section sequence: what to check, the safe action sequence, what not to do, the escalation rule, and sourced references. 14 related owner-help systems covering other symptom groups are linked below for the adjacent conditions this one is most often confused with, and each guide's own source and reviewed date sit beside its escalation rule.

Water collects on the front passenger floor
Common paths include an A/C evaporator drain, cowl or windshield sealing, sunroof drains and heater-core leakage. The liquid’s timing, odor and temperature help distinguish rainwater, condensate and coolant.
Sunroof drain leak or wet headliner
Sunroof trays manage small amounts of water through drains; clogged, disconnected or pinched tubes can overflow into pillars and electronics. Confirm the path with low-volume water instead of forcing compressed air through it.
Wind noise after windshield replacement
New wind noise can come from molding, urethane gaps, cowl fit, mirror trim or an unrelated door seal. It may also signal sealing that could admit water, so document speed and location and return for a controlled leak/noise test.
Vehicle door will not latch in cold weather
Moisture can freeze a latch or cable, while worn components can fail independently of temperature. Keep the vehicle stationary until the door positively latches; warming and approved de-icing are safer than slamming it.
Power liftgate reverses or will not close
Obstruction sensing, weak supports, latch misalignment, low voltage, pinch-strip faults or lost height initialization can make a power liftgate reverse. Keep people clear and test only after checking for physical binding.
Rattle or clunk over bumps
A bump-related noise can come from loose cargo, exhaust shields, sway-bar links, strut mounts, control-arm bushings or body closures. Remove unsecured items, then locate whether the sound follows one wheel, body twist or suspension travel.
Whistle appears only at highway speed
A whistle usually needs airflow through a small gap at glass, seals, roof equipment, mirrors, cowl or body plugs. Document speed and wind direction and use removable diagnostic tape only where it cannot obstruct sensors or visibility.
Musty smell when the climate system starts
Odor often develops from moisture on the evaporator, a wet cabin filter, blocked drain or interior water leak. Replacing the filter helps only when the moisture source and contaminated surfaces are also addressed.
Paint bubbling or rust beginning at a panel edge
Bubbling usually means corrosion is developing beneath the coating, often at chips, seams, drain paths or prior repair. Early inspection can determine whether cleaning and refinishing are enough or metal repair is required.
Exhaust smell inside the passenger cabin
Exhaust odor can indicate a leak, open body seal, tailgate pressure effect or nearby vehicle, but carbon monoxide is odorless and dangerous. Open windows, stop in fresh air and do not continue using the vehicle until the source is checked.

What owners report
Body, water and noise: complaints filed with NHTSA.
Body complaints are mostly about sealing and fit: door and window seals that harden, sunroof drains that clog and let water into the cabin, clogged cowl drains that flood the footwell, and wind noise from a misaligned door. Water that reaches carpet or electronics causes the expensive faults, so the first check on a damp car is the drain path, not the seal.
Squeaks and rattles are usually trim clips, dried bushings or loose fasteners, and are found with a slow drive and a helper.
