Towing and trailering: 10 decision guides.

Check trailer stability, brakes, lights, tongue weight, payload, hitch setup, Tow/Haul operation and trailer tires. The towing and trailering desk holds 10 of the site's 126 ownership guides: 4 rated stop driving, 4 rated routine, 2 rated depends. A reader in a hurry can jump straight to the escalation rule. One with more time can work through the evidence first, because each guide follows the same five-section sequence: what to check, the safe action sequence, what not to do, the escalation rule, and sourced references. 14 related owner-help systems covering other symptom groups are linked below for the adjacent conditions this one is most often confused with, and each guide's own source and reviewed date sit beside its escalation rule.

Trailer begins swaying while towing

Sway can result from speed, crosswind, improper tongue-weight distribution, tire problems or abrupt steering. Hold the wheel steady, ease off the accelerator and use the trailer-brake control manually if the tow guide instructs: do not accelerate through it.

Stop driving

Electric trailer brakes are not working

Loss of trailer brakes can involve the connector, ground, breakaway system, controller settings, wiring, magnets or mechanical adjustment. Treat the combination’s stopping distance as compromised and pull over safely.

→
03
Stop driving

Trailer running, brake or turn lights do not work

Test the tow vehicle socket and trailer separately. Corroded pins, poor grounds, blown protected circuits, converter modules and damaged harnesses can remove one or all lighting functions.

→
04
Depends

How to recognize incorrect trailer tongue weight

Too little tongue weight promotes instability; too much can overload payload, hitch or rear axle and unload the front axle. Measure the loaded trailer and tongue, not estimating from empty brochure weight.

→
05
Depends

Tow vehicle sags at the rear when the trailer is connected

Rear sag signals added load but does not by itself prove overload. Calculate payload, measure axle weights and inspect hitch height; helper springs may level appearance without increasing any legal or manufacturer rating.

→
06
Stop driving

Trailer plug or connector becomes hot

A warm-to-hot connector can indicate high resistance from corrosion, loose terminals, undersized wiring or excessive current. Disconnect power once safely stopped and inspect before heat damages the socket or creates a fire risk.

When a weight-distribution hitch is required

The tow vehicle and receiver instructions, not trailer size alone, determine whether weight distribution is required, permitted or prohibited. It redistributes hitch load but cannot raise payload, axle, tire, receiver or tow ratings.

→

Routine

When to use Tow/Haul mode

Tow/Haul mode typically changes shift scheduling, engine braking and cooling strategy; it does not increase the tow rating. Use it under the conditions stated in the owner’s manual, which may include heavy loads even without a trailer.

→
09
Routine

Trailer tire pressure, load and age checks

Trailer tires operate near high loads and can look usable while aged or underinflated. Set cold pressure according to the trailer/tire requirements, verify load capacity and inspect date codes, cracking and impact damage.

Why the payload sticker beats the brochure maximum

Brochure payload is usually a maximum for a favorable configuration. The tire-and-loading label on the actual vehicle reflects its as-built occupant-and-cargo allowance before later accessories or modifications.

What owners report

Towing and trailering: complaints filed with NHTSA.

A tow rating is only one of four limits. Payload, gross vehicle weight rating, gross combined weight rating and tongue weight all apply at once, and the lowest one controls. Trailer tongue weight counts against payload, so a truck with a 9,000-pound tow rating and 1,600 pounds of payload can be overloaded by a heavy trailer and a full cab.

Trailer brakes, a weight-distribution hitch and a properly tuned tow mode belong in the plan before the first trip.

Trailer Hitches

Owners filed 23 complaints under trailer hitches across the model years 2019 and later in our records. The largest single model-year counts were Kia Sorento (2020), 9; Hyundai Tucson (2024), 7; Kia Sportage (2022), 4; Kia Sportage (2019), 3.

Vehicle Speed Control

Owners filed 2,710 complaints under vehicle speed control across the model years 2019 and later in our records. The largest single model-year counts were Tesla Model 3 (2022), 171; Tesla Model 3 (2021), 123; Jeep Cherokee (2019), 82; Tesla Model 3 (2019), 71.

Payload and towing ratings are set separately, and both are lower than most buyers assume. Rows from our Kelley Blue Book records:
