Owner decision guide

When should engine coolant be replaced?

Coolant service is based on the exact chemistry, time and mileage, not color alone. Mixing incompatible formulas can reduce corrosion protection or create deposits, so use the specified product and an appropriate fill/bleed procedure. Before acting, check Exact coolant specification, Age, mileage and prior mixtures, Freeze protection and pH where testable, Leaks, cap and hose condition. Record the exact condition, since temperature, speed, load and warning status all change the diagnosis. The sections below break this down further: what depleted coolant does, coolant types do not mix, checking it, never open a hot system. This is rated routine risk: Pressure-test and repair before service if coolant is disappearing, contaminated, oily or accompanied by overheating. 4 related questions are answered separately below. Reviewed under this site's evidence-first standard, sourced to FuelEconomy.gov maintenance guidance, with related maintenance and fluids guides linked at the end.

Evidence first

Coolant does three jobs: transfers heat, prevents freezing, and protects the entire cooling system from corrosion. The corrosion inhibitors deplete over time, and once they do the coolant continues to control temperature while quietly attacking the aluminium, iron and gaskets it flows through.

That is why coolant is changed on a schedule even when it looks fine.

What depleted coolant does

Corrosion, not overheating, is usually what old coolant causes.

  • Attacks aluminium components including the radiator, heater core and water pump
  • Forms deposits that restrict the narrow passages in radiators and heater cores
  • Becomes acidic, which attacks gaskets and seals
  • Can cause electrolysis that erodes metal components
  • Loses freeze protection, risking a cracked block in severe cold
  • Loses boil protection, lowering the temperature at which the system boils over

Coolant types do not mix

Formulations differ chemically, and mixing incompatible ones can produce a gel that blocks passages.

Colour is not a reliable indicator of type. Different manufacturers use different colours for the same chemistry and the same colour for different chemistries. Use what the manual specifies. If you do not know what is in the system, have it flushed and refilled with the correct type instead of topping up and hoping.

Checking it

A few things you can observe.

  • Check level only when the engine is completely cold
  • Look for a rusty or brown tint, or floating particles
  • A refractometer or test strips measure freeze protection accurately
  • Test strips also check the remaining corrosion inhibitor level on some types
  • Oily film on the coolant surface suggests oil intrusion
  • Bubbles with the engine running suggest combustion gases entering the system

Never open a hot system

A cooling system is pressurised, and pressurised coolant is well above its atmospheric boiling point. Opening the cap releases the pressure, and the coolant flashes to steam instantly.

This causes severe scalding injuries every year. Wait until the engine is completely cold, hours, not minutes, before removing any cap, and never top up an overheated engine while it is hot.

  1. 1

    Consult the exact maintenance schedule

  2. 2

    Let the engine cool fully

  3. 3

Drain and refill or exchange as specified

  4. 4

Bleed air using the manufacturer procedure

Avoid making it worse

What not to do

  • Do not choose by color alone
  • Do not open a hot cap
Escalation rule

Pressure-test and repair before service if coolant is disappearing, contaminated, oily or accompanied by overheating.

Source and scope

Common questions

How often should coolant be changed?

Follow the manufacturer's interval, which varies widely by coolant type. The corrosion inhibitors deplete over time even when the coolant still controls temperature normally.

Can I mix different coolant colours?

Do not mix formulations. Colour is not a reliable indicator of chemistry, and incompatible coolants can gel and block passages. Use what the manual specifies.

What does old coolant damage?

Once the inhibitors deplete, it attacks aluminium components, forms deposits that restrict radiators and heater cores, becomes acidic and attacks gaskets and seals.

Can I open the radiator cap to check it?

Only when the engine is completely cold. A pressurised system releases coolant well above its atmospheric boiling point, which flashes to steam and causes severe scalding.
