What changed on the 2023 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

GM Authority (opens in a new tab) calls 2023 the fifth model year of the fourth-generation light-duty pickup, following the 2022.5 interim refresh, with a few small changes and updates. Kevin's Autos (opens in a new tab) says it is not a redesign and notes updated equipment-group availability, with some features standard on mid-tier trims.

ChevyGuide (opens in a new tab) lists a 2.7-liter turbo four, 5.3-liter V8, 6.2-liter V8 and 3.0-liter Duramax diesel. Car and Driver (opens in a new tab) says the diesel is the most economical, up to 23 mpg city and 33 highway, and that the 5.3-liter V8 with all-wheel drive is rated up to 16/22.

Recalls and problems owners report

NHTSA lists five recall campaigns across the 2023 Silverado line. 22V903000 covers daytime running lights that may not turn off with the headlights, 24V674000 covers brake control software that may not warn of low brake fluid, and 25V274000 covers connecting rod or crankshaft defects in 6.2-liter V8 engines that can lead to engine damage. 24V060000 covers power-unlatching tailgates on 2500 and 3500 trucks, and 25V390000 covers a leaking brake pressure sensor on Medium Duty trucks.

Owners have filed 448 complaints, led by engine with 161, power train with 132, electrical system with 79, unknown or other with 54, fuel and propulsion system with 37 and service brakes with 30. ProblemsByVin (opens in a new tab) summarizes the record, ChevyGuide (opens in a new tab) covers transmission behavior and infotainment glitches, and Consumer Reports (opens in a new tab) rates it less reliable than other cars of its model year.

2023 Silverado against the Ram 1500 and Tundra
