Generation history

Audi A7 generations and next redesign.

The Audi A7 has been through 2 generations, starting in 2010 and 2018. The gaps were 8 years, an average of 8.0. The pace has been steady. The current generation began in 2018. On that cadence the next full redesign points to 2025 through 2027, centered on 2026. This is a projection. It comes from the model's own past redesign years, not from the manufacturer. A mid-cycle refresh usually lands in between. Public records describe the current generation this way: The second generation A7 was revealed in October 2017, officially launching in Germany in February 2018, and has been on sale in Europe since late 2017. Specifications, trims and the NHTSA safety record are on the Audi A7 model page.

In more detail

What each Audi A7 generation changed.

First generation, 2010 to 2018

The A7 is in essence a four-door fastback version of the C7-series Audi A6, based on the Volkswagen Group MLB platform. The A7 was released before the more conventional A6 saloon/estate. Both cars share the same core structure, drivetrain, chassis, dashboard and interior, whilst the A7 has its own unique exterior panelwork. It also differs from the A6 in that it uses aluminium for much of its front body structure.

Second generation, 2018 to today

The second generation A7 was revealed in October 2017, officially launching in Germany in February 2018, and has been on sale in Europe since late 2017. It made its North American debut at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit on 12 January 2018. Production started in February 2018 at Audi's Neckarsulm plant.
