Generation history
BMW M4 generations and next redesign.
The BMW M4 has been through 2 generations, starting in 2014 and 2020. The gaps were 6 years, an average of 6.0. Redesigns come quickly on this model. The current generation began in 2020. On that cadence the next full redesign points to 2025 through 2027, centered on 2026. This is a projection. It comes from the model's own past redesign years, not from the manufacturer. A mid-cycle refresh usually lands in between. Public records describe the current generation this way: The second iteration of the BMW M4 (codenamed G82) is largely based on the standard 4 Series (G22 generation), which was previewed by the BMW Concept 4. Specifications, trims and the NHTSA safety record are on the BMW M4 model page.

In more detail
What each BMW M4 generation changed.
First generation, 2014 to 2020
On 25 September 2013, BMW released the technical specifications of the M4. It is powered by the S55B30 engine, which is developed and engineered by BMW M GmbH. This 3.0-litre inline-6 engine has been built specifically for the new M4/M3, having a redline of 7,600 rpm with the rev limiter actuated at 7,300 rpm. The engine uses two mono-scroll turbochargers with a peak boost pressure of 18.1 psi (1.2 bar).
Second generation, 2020 to today
The second iteration of the BMW M4 (codenamed G82) is largely based on the standard 4 Series (G22 generation), which was previewed by the BMW Concept 4. It is a high performance version of the standard G22 4 Series. Prototypes of the M4 were testing on the Nürburgring beside the G80 BMW M3. The first units were assembled in November 2020, with global deliveries starting in early 2021.
