BMW M4

The BMW M4 is the high-performance version of the 4 Series, built by BMW M GmbH since 2014 in two generations, the F82/F83 and the G82/G83 from 2020. REREV says it is worth buying as long as you avoid the 2015 and 2019 model years, and the M4 Competition has a 523-hp twin-turbo inline-six with standard M xDrive.

What the BMW M4 is and who buys it

Wikipedia (opens in a new tab) describes the M4 as a high-performance version of the BMW 4 Series developed by BMW's motorsport division, BMW M GmbH, built since 2014 as part of the renumbering that split the coupe and convertible variants of the 3 Series into the 4 Series, with a first generation (F82/F83) from 2014 and a second (G82/G83) from 2020. BMW Blog (opens in a new tab) says the M3 and M4 are nearly identical on paper, that the M3 usually weighs slightly more, and that an F83 M4 Convertible weighs around 4,055 pounds compared with roughly 3,550 pounds for the fixed-roof F80 M3 and F82 M4. The 2027 M4 page lists the current specifications.

Best and worst M4 model years

REREV (opens in a new tab) says the BMW M4 is worth buying as long as you avoid the 2015 and 2019 model years. CarGurus (opens in a new tab) notes that BMW was among the top 10 car brands in the 2024 Consumer Reports predicted reliability survey, and says the first-generation M4 arrived a year or so after the standard 4 Series. CarsCounsel (opens in a new tab) and Best Car Year (opens in a new tab) publish year-by-year lists for owners weighing the two generations.

How it compares

Reef Brief (opens in a new tab) says the M4 Competition, with its 523-hp twin-turbo inline-six and standard M xDrive, starts at £87,495 in the UK, that a buyer choosing between the M8 and M4 Competition gets a genuine split between grand touring and prestige on one side and sharper handling and better value on the other, and that the CS is the clear performance upgrade.
