Generation history
Chevrolet Bolt Generations & Next Redesign
Revival of a discontinued nameplate (original Bolt EV/EUV ended after MY2023) on a new EV architecture, not a numbered continuation of the prior generation. GM's own materials call it simply 'the 2027 Bolt' returning 'by popular demand': no generation ordinal asserted by Chevrolet. Chevrolet has not assigned this vehicle a numbered generation, so it is tracked here by verified redesign year alone. Public generation records show the Bolt changing generation in 2026, an average of 10.0 years apart. The 2027 Bolt lineup spans 2 published trims (LT, RS), offered with FWD drivetrain and 210 horsepower. The 2027 Bolt is an electric hatchback with Single electric motor, 65-kWh LFP battery.

The relaunched Bolt returns with a 65-kWh LFP battery, a 210-hp single motor and an EPA-estimated 262-mile range shared across both trims. It is the first Chevrolet with a NACS (SAE J3400) charging port for both AC and DC fast charging, with a 10-80% DC fast-charge time around 25 minutes.

When is the next redesign?
Not enough data to estimate.
There is no 'next redesign' question here: GM Authority reports the Fairfax plant converts to the next-gen Buick Envision in 2028 and the Bolt has no announced successor. GM has said only that a future 'next-gen affordable EV' is planned for the plant, with no name or date given.
The model's own past redesign years drive this estimate. No manufacturer has announced it.

Background and safety record
What public sources say about the Chevrolet Bolt.
The Chevrolet Bolt (marketed in Europe as Opel Ampera-e) is a family of battery electric subcompact hatchbacks and small crossover SUVs manufactured and marketed by General Motors under its Chevrolet brand from late 2016, with hiatuses in 2021-2022 and 2023–2025. The 2017-2023 Bolt EV are hatchbacks, while the 2021-2023 Bolt EUV and 2027 Bolt are slightly larger subcompact crossover SUVs. The first-generation Bolt was developed and manufactured with LG Corporation.
- Recalls and problems
- In November 2020, 50,932 Chevrolet Bolt vehicles of model year 2017–2019 were recalled due to potential fire risk. According to GM, these vehicles contained high voltage batteries produced at LG Chem's Ochang plant that may pose a risk of fire "when charged to full, or very close to full, capacity".
