Generation history

Chevrolet Trax generations and next redesign.

The Chevrolet Trax has been through 2 generations, starting in 2013 and 2023. The gaps were 10 years, an average of 10.0. The pace has been steady. The current generation began in 2023. On that cadence the next full redesign points to 2032 through 2034, centered on 2033. This is a projection. It comes from the model's own past redesign years, not from the manufacturer. A mid-cycle refresh usually lands in between. Public records describe the current generation this way: The second-generation Trax debuted in China in July 2022 as the Chevrolet Seeker. Specifications, trims and the NHTSA safety record are on the Chevrolet Trax model page.

What each Chevrolet Trax generation changed.

First generation, 2013 to 2023

The first-generation Trax (model code U200, designated TJ in Australia) was first shown as a concept car, which was first unveiled at the 2012 Paris Motor Show, with the final model unveiled at the 2013 North American International Auto Show. It was then available for test driving at the 2013 Montreal International Auto Show, with four essay models shown. The SUV was in development since 2008 by GM's small vehicle development team centered in South Korea.

Second generation, 2023 to today

The second-generation Trax debuted in China in July 2022 as the Chevrolet Seeker. The North American version was unveiled in October 2022, with sales beginning in the second quarter of 2023 for the 2024 model year. It is larger and lower than its predecessor. Although larger than the Trailblazer, it is priced below that model; reports indicated an average transaction price approximately $5,000 lower.

Recent recalls (2 campaigns across the latest model years)

  • August 2026, Back Over Prevention: Sensing System: Camera. General Motors, LLC is recalling certain 2024-2025 Buick Envista, 2024-2026 Buick Encore GX, Chevrolet Trailblazer, and 2025 Chevrolet Trax vehicles. The rearview camera screen may display a distorted or blank image. Consequence: A rearview image that does not display correctly reduces the driver's view behind the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.
  • November 2023, Electrical System: Instrument Cluster/Panel. General Motors, LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2024 Buick Encore GX, Envista, and Chevrolet Trax vehicles. The software in the Virtual Cockpit Unit Module (VCU) may cause the instrument panel display to intermittently go blank at vehicle startup or while driving. Consequence: A blank instrument panel will not show critical information, such as vehicle speed and warning lights, increasing the risk of a crash.

Owners filed 86 complaints with NHTSA for the 2025 Chevrolet Trax, most often about electrical system (30), unknown or other (21), engine (15).
