Owner decision guide
Keyless entry or push-button start does not detect the key
A weak fob battery, radio interference, antenna fault, low 12-volt voltage or lost key registration can cause intermittent no-key messages. Use the manual’s emergency fob location before assuming the immobilizer failed. Before acting, check Spare key behavior, Fob battery orientation and voltage, Vehicle 12-volt condition and interference at the location. Record the exact condition, since temperature, speed, load and warning status all change the diagnosis. The sections below break this down further: the backup start procedure, interference, replacing the battery, when it is the vehicle. This is rated soon risk: Arrange roadside help if the vehicle cannot recognize any authorized key, locks a person inside or repeatedly shuts down unexpectedly. 4 related questions are answered separately below. Reviewed under this site's evidence-first standard, sourced to NHTSA vehicle and recall guidance, with related driver assistance and infotainment guides linked at the end.
Evidence first
A key fob the vehicle cannot detect has a short list of causes, and a dead coin cell tops it. Fob batteries typically last a few years and fail gradually: the detection range shrinks before it stops working entirely.
Nearly every keyless vehicle has a documented backup method for starting with a dead fob.
The backup start procedure
Manufacturers build in a way to start the vehicle when the fob will not communicate wirelessly.
- Hold the fob against the start button on many vehicles
- Place the fob in a marked pocket in the centre console or cupholder on others
- Insert a mechanical key hidden inside the fob into a concealed door lock
- Check the owner's manual for the specific procedure before the battery dies, not after
Interference
The fob communicates on a low-power radio link that is easily swamped.
- Proximity to another key fob, particularly a second fob in the same pocket
- Phones, laptops and wireless chargers held against the fob
- Strong radio sources near airports, broadcast towers and some commercial buildings
- Aftermarket electronics or dash cameras with poor shielding
- A metal case or wallet the fob is carried in
Replacing the battery
Most fobs open with a small screwdriver or a coin, and take a standard lithium coin cell. Note the cell number printed on the old battery and check its orientation before removing it.
Some fobs need a relearn procedure after a battery change; most do not. If detection does not return after fitting a fresh cell, that is worth checking.
When it is the vehicle
If a second fob works normally, the fault is in the first fob. If neither works, the vehicle's receiver, antenna or a fuse is more likely.
A weak 12-volt vehicle battery can also disrupt keyless systems, often alongside other odd electrical behaviour at start.

What to do next
| Step | Action |
|---|---|
| 1 | Move other electronics and keys away |
| 2 | Try the spare key and emergency start position |
| 3 | Scan body/security modules if both keys fail |

Avoid making it worse
What not to do
- Do not leave the only working key inside during testing
- Do not buy an unverified online key without programming compatibility
Arrange roadside help if the vehicle cannot recognize any authorized key, locks a person inside or repeatedly shuts down unexpectedly.

Common questions
How do I start my car with a dead key fob?
Most vehicles allow holding the fob directly against the start button, or placing it in a marked console pocket. The exact procedure is in the owner's manual: look it up before you need it.
How long does a key fob battery last?
Typically a few years. Detection range usually shrinks noticeably before the fob stops working entirely, which is the warning to replace the cell.
Can my phone interfere with the fob?
It can, particularly when carried directly against the fob or on a wireless charger. Carrying two fobs together also causes interference on some vehicles.
Why does neither of my fobs work?
When both fail, the fault is more likely in the vehicle, the receiver, an antenna, a fuse, or a weak 12-volt battery, instead of in the fobs.
