BMW i7
The BMW i7 is the electric version of the eighth-generation 7 Series (G70), built since July 2022 with model years from 2023. Federal data shows 11 recalls on the 2023 falling to 6 on the 2024 and 2 on the 2025, and SafeCarInfo says to consider the 2025 for the best safety record. The 2026 i7 starts at $106,875 for the eDrive50 with the M70 at $169,675.
What the BMW i7 is
Wikipedia (opens in a new tab) describes the 7 Series (G70) as a full-size luxury sedan made by BMW since July 2022 with model years from 2023, built in Dingolfing, Germany and assembled in Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia, on the Cluster Architecture platform, with the i7 as its electric version. Motor Trend (opens in a new tab) says the i7's considerable weight is offset by its equally large battery pack, that the range-topping trim costs too much to recommend to most buyers, and that rear passengers get acres of legroom and options like a 31-inch 4K entertainment system. The 2026 i7 is rated 75 to 88 mpg-equivalent by the EPA, about $850 to $1,000 a year in fuel, and Kelley Blue Book base prices are $106,875 for the eDrive50, $125,375 for the xDrive60 and $169,675 for the M70.
Recalls by year
Federal data lists 11 recalls on the 2023 i7, covering the electrical system, air bags, seats and wipers, 6 on the 2024, for the electrical system, stability control and brakes, and 2 on the 2025, with 1 complaint. SafeCarInfo (opens in a new tab) says the i7 has been tracked across 3 model years with 16 total recalls recorded, and that for the best safety record buyers should consider the 2025 model year. VIN Check Engine (opens in a new tab) ranks every i7 year from 2023 to 2026 by recall count, complaint volume, deaths and injuries.
Choosing a year
The recall count falls from 11 on the 2023 to 2 on the 2025, so a 2025 carries far less recall history. On a 2023 or 2024 i7, confirm by VIN that the electrical system and stability control campaigns are closed.

Background and safety record
What public sources say about the BMW i7.
G70 is the internal designation for the seventh generation of the BMW 7 Series, a range of Full-size luxury cars produced by the German luxury vehicle manufacturer BMW since July 2022. Introduced in April 2022, "7 Series" and "i7" serve as the respective designations to the automaker's full-size luxury flagship models in internal combustion and battery electric configurations. BMW had unveiled the model on 20 April 2022 during the nameplate's 45th anniversary.
- Development
- Development of the G70 commenced in 2017 when BMW began conceiving ideas on how they would replace the G11 / G12. Design concepts had been received from design centres in the United States, Europe and Asia.
- Specifications
- Mild hybrid models feature a 48-volt starter-generator/electric motor integrated into the transmission, which is paired with a 20 Ah lithium-ion battery to increase efficiency and power delivery. Plug-in hybrid models feature a permanent-magnet synchronous motor, paired with an 18.7 kWh lithium-ion battery.
- Charging
- For the eDrive50 and xDrive60 models, AC slow charging via an 11 kW Type 2 connector will take 11 hours. DC fast charging for the eDrive50 and xDrive60 at a capacity of 195-200 kW via a CCS port for a 10-80% charge will take a time of 28 minutes.

Method: recall counts and their affected components come from the NHTSA Office of Defects Investigation: Recalls API, queried by exact make, model and model year. Complaint counts come from the NHTSA Office of Defects Investigation: Complaints API, same query pattern. Data pulled 2026-09-04.
Known gap: the NHTSA complaints API did not return data for BMW i7 model years 2023, 2024 when queried for this page: the request itself failed upstream, not returning a genuine zero. Those years are marked "not available" above instead of shown as clean; recall counts for those years are unaffected and come from the separate recalls API, which returned data for every year listed.
Check open recalls by VIN for one particular vehicle.
Q01Is there a best year to buy a BMW i7?
Recall count alone can't answer that: it says nothing about a specific vehicle's price, mileage, accident history or maintenance record. What federal data can say: 2025 carried fewer recalls than this model's own average, while 2023 carried more. See the model-year table on this page for the exact counts and what they cover.
Q02Which BMW i7 model years should I watch for recalls?
The 2023 BMW i7 has 11 federal recalls on file, most commonly affecting electrical system, airbags, seats. Always confirm the open/completed status of every campaign for the specific VIN: a recall on this list may already be repaired on the vehicle in front of you.
Q03Which BMW i7 model years have the cleanest federal recall record?
The 2025 BMW i7 has 2 recalls on file: below this model's own average of 6.3. A shorter list on file as of this page's data pull is not a guarantee against a future recall.
Q04What are common recall-related problems on the BMW i7 by model year?
2025: stability control, brakes. 2024: electrical system, stability control, brakes. 2023: electrical system, airbags, seats, visibility/wipers.
Q05Why do some BMW i7 model years show "not available" for complaints?
The NHTSA complaints API did not return data for BMW i7 model years 2023, 2024 when queried for this page: the request itself failed upstream instead of the count genuinely being zero. Recall counts for those years are unaffected; they come from a separate NHTSA endpoint that returned data for every year listed.
