What the BMW iX is
Wikipedia (opens in a new tab) describes the iX (model code I20) as a battery-electric mid-size luxury crossover SUV made by BMW at Dingolfing, Germany since July 2021, dual-motor all-wheel drive, with model years from 2022, up to 701 km of WLTP range and a facelift. It names the BMW iX5 as its North American successor. The 2026 iX is rated 75 to 97 mpg-equivalent by the EPA, about $800 to $1,000 a year in fuel, and Kelley Blue Book base prices are $76,325 for the xDrive45, $89,675 for the xDrive60 and $112,675 for the M70.
Best and worst iX model years
Federal data shows the first two years carrying the recalls. The 2022 iX has 11 recalls, covering the electrical system, air bags, backup camera and vehicle speed control, with 29 complaints, and the 2023 iX has 12 with 38 complaints. The 2024 has 4 recalls and 32 complaints, and the 2025 has 1 recall and 12 complaints.
REREV (opens in a new tab) says the 2023 is the worst model year overall, with Consumer Reports rating it much less reliable than other cars from the same model year and NHTSA issuing 12 recalls against it, and that the first two model years arrived with a wave of safety recalls and reliability complaints buyers cannot ignore. VIN Check Engine (opens in a new tab) publishes a years-to-avoid list for 2022 to 2026.
Choosing a year
The recall count drops from 12 on the 2023 to 4 on the 2024 and 1 on the 2025, so a 2024 or 2025 iX carries far less recall history than the first two years. On a 2022 or 2023, confirm by VIN that all campaigns are closed.

Background and safety record
What public sources say about the BMW iX.
The BMW iX is a battery-electric mid-size luxury crossover SUV manufactured and marketed by the German automobile manufacturer BMW. It was unveiled in concept form as the Vision iNext at the 2018 LA Auto Show, and then in its production form in November 2020. The iX is BMW's second fully electric vehicle after the i3 in 2013, and the fourth BMW i sub-brand model.
- Specifications
- The BMW iX is built on a bespoke electric drivetrain architecture and an aluminum spaceframe with carbon fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP) side frame, rain channels, roof frame and rear window aperture. The electric platform is a "totally new development", though it is "highly compatible" with the modular CLAR platform.
- Powertrain
- The iX utilise BMW's fifth-generation scalable electric drivetrain that is developed in-house. The electric powertrain combines the electric motor, power electronics and single-speed transmission in a single housing. The power density of the system is around 30 percent higher than previously, according to BMW.

Q01Is there a best year to buy a BMW iX?
Recall count alone can't answer that: it says nothing about a specific vehicle's price, mileage, accident history or maintenance record. What federal data can say: 2025 carried fewer recalls than this model's own average, while 2023 carried more. See the model-year table on this page for the exact counts and what they cover.
Q02Which BMW iX model years should I watch for recalls?
The 2023 BMW iX has 12 federal recalls on file, most commonly affecting electrical system, airbags, backup camera. Always confirm the open/completed status of every campaign for the specific VIN: a recall on this list may already be repaired on the vehicle in front of you.
Q03Which BMW iX model years have the cleanest federal recall record?
The 2025 BMW iX has 1 recall on file: below this model's own average of 7.0. A shorter list on file as of this page's data pull is not a guarantee against a future recall.
Q04What are common recall-related problems on the BMW iX by model year?
2025: electrical system. 2024: electrical system, Vehicle Speed Control. 2023: electrical system, airbags, backup camera, Vehicle Speed Control. 2022: electrical system, airbags, backup camera, Vehicle Speed Control.
