2022 Chevrolet Equinox
The 2022 Chevrolet Equinox is the mid-cycle facelift of the second-generation Equinox, with new front styling and a reorganized trim and option lineup. Five recalls apply, including a fuel pump module that may not deliver enough fuel. Used prices run $16,300 to $18,950, and the EPA rates it 27 to 28 mpg combined.
What changed on the 2022 Chevrolet Equinox
MotorTrend (opens in a new tab) says the current-generation Equinox was introduced for 2018, so the updated 2022 model marks the start of the second half of its lifecycle before a full redesign, and that Chevrolet's compact SUV 'makes a trip to the plastic surgeon' for 2022, with more attractive styling and updates to the available trims. MotorBiscuit (opens in a new tab) details the front-end work: refreshed headlights, a new grille and updated bumpers. GM-Trucks.com (opens in a new tab) adds that the refresh was originally planned for 2021, that it brings lots of new features and colors, and that it comes with a total re-organization of the packaging and options, the same refresh the GMC Terrain got.
Recalls on the 2022 Equinox
NHTSA lists five recalls. 23V013 covers 2021 to 2022 Equinox and 2022 GMC Terrain models where the fuel pump module may not consistently provide sufficient fuel pressure. 21V612 covers certain 2021 to 2022 Equinox and Terrain vehicles fitted with Hankook tires that may have been manufactured with an insufficient amount of a key material. 22V359 covers a driver's seat cushion frame that may have an improper weld in the power seat. 22V724 covers a driver's seat with a stripped or loose bolt at the height-adjust pivot. 23V339 covers the four rear-seat lower child seat LATCH anchorage bars on 2020 to 2023 Equinox and Terrain models. Each depends on build date and equipment, so a VIN check at nhtsa.gov/recalls is the only way to know what applies to a given car.
What owners report
NHTSA holds 170 complaints on the 2022 Equinox. Fuel and propulsion system problems lead with 74, fuel system 32, gasoline 32, engine 25, electrical system 20 and unclassified 15. Those first three groups describe the same failure mode from three angles, so the fuel delivery trouble is the model year's defining complaint. CarFactBase (opens in a new tab) quotes a repair order in which technicians found a fuel pump issue on four of one dealer's 2022 Equinoxes, and an owner who learned after a repair that a recall covered only 'some' 2022 Equinoxes. Kelley Blue Book (opens in a new tab) does not have enough repair-order data to list common problems.
So the practical check is short: confirm that the fuel pump recall was performed, and watch on the test drive for hesitation or stalling under load.
What a 2022 Equinox costs today
Kelley Blue Book (opens in a new tab) says used 2022 Equinox prices run from $16,300 for the LS to $18,950 for the Premier at a dealership. Its depreciation page (opens in a new tab) says a 2022 Equinox has depreciated $5,652, or 27 percent, in three years, leaving a resale value of $15,050 and a trade-in value of $11,200.
2022 Equinox against the Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4
The 2022 Equinox rates 27 to 28 mpg combined and $2,250 to $2,300 a year in fuel on fueleconomy.gov (opens in a new tab), with one engine, a 1.5-liter turbo four. The 2022 Honda CR-V rates 29 to 38 mpg ($1,650 to $2,150) and the Toyota RAV4 28 to 40 mpg ($1,550 to $2,250), and both offer hybrids, so at the top of their ranges they cost less to run. The Equinox's fuel pump recall and complaint record are the extra thing to weigh against them.
