The Genesis G90 is the flagship full-size sedan of the Genesis lineup, made since 2015 as the successor to the Hyundai Equus, now in its second generation from 2021. REREV says the 2018 is the single most problematic year to buy used, rated worst on CarComplaints, while 2019 to 2021 are the cleanest first-generation picks; federal data shows the 2023 with 6 recalls, the most of any year. The 2026 G90 starts at $94,195.
What the Genesis G90 is and who buys it
Wikipedia (opens in a new tab) describes the G90 as a full-size car made since 2015 by Genesis, the luxury division of Hyundai, the flagship of the Genesis lineup and the successor to the Hyundai Equus, with a first generation (HI) from 2015 and a second (RS4) from 2021, including a long-wheelbase version. The 2026 G90 has a 3.5L turbo V6 or a mild-hybrid version of it, all-wheel drive, rated 20 to 21 mpg combined by the EPA, about $3,700 to $3,900 a year in fuel. Kelley Blue Book base prices are $94,195 for the 3.5T, $104,495 for the 3.5T E-SC and $107,245 for the E-SC Prestige Black.
Best and worst G90 model years
Federal data lists 3 recalls on the 2017, 4 on the 2018 G90 with 16 complaints, 2 on the 2019, and 1 each on 2020 and 2021. The 2022 has 2, the 2023 has 6, the most of any year, covering seat belts, the fuel system and electrical system, and the 2024 and 2025 have 4 each.
REREV (opens in a new tab) says the 2018 is the single most problematic year to buy used, rated worst on CarComplaints by repair cost and mileage at failure, and that 2019 through 2021 represent the cleanest first-generation picks. It notes that different rating sources use different methodology and often name different years as worst, so each claim should be attributed to its source. A guide on bestyears (opens in a new tab) says the lower price point and availability of the V8 make some earlier years appealing to certain buyers.
Choosing a year
The 2019 to 2021 first-generation cars are the picks the guides agree on, and the second-generation 2023 has the most recalls to check by VIN, ahead of the 2024 and 2025.

Method: recall counts and their affected components come from the NHTSA Office of Defects Investigation: Recalls API, queried by exact make, model and model year. Complaint counts come from the NHTSA Office of Defects Investigation: Complaints API, same query pattern. Data pulled 2026-09-04.
Known gap: the NHTSA complaints API did not return data for Genesis G90 model year 2026 when queried for this page: the request itself failed upstream, not returning a genuine zero. Those years are marked "not available" above instead of shown as clean; recall counts for those years are unaffected and come from the separate recalls API, which returned data for every year listed.
Check open recalls by VIN for one particular vehicle.
Q01Is there a best year to buy a Genesis G90?
Recall count alone can't answer that: it says nothing about a specific vehicle's price, mileage, accident history or maintenance record. What federal data can say: 2023 carried more. See the model-year table on this page for the exact counts and what they cover.
Q02Which Genesis G90 model years should I watch for recalls?
The 2023 Genesis G90 has 6 federal recalls on file, most commonly affecting seat belts, fuel system, electrical system. Always confirm the open/completed status of every campaign for the specific VIN: a recall on this list may already be repaired on the vehicle in front of you.
Q03What are common recall-related problems on the Genesis G90 by model year?
2026: electrical system, seat belts. 2025: electrical system, seat belts, fuel system. 2024: electrical system, seat belts, fuel system. 2023: seat belts, fuel system, electrical system. 2022: engine cooling, fuel system. 2021: engine cooling.
Q04Why do some Genesis G90 model years show "not available" for complaints?
The NHTSA complaints API did not return data for Genesis G90 model year 2026 when queried for this page: the request itself failed upstream instead of the count genuinely being zero. Recall counts for those years are unaffected; they come from a separate NHTSA endpoint that returned data for every year listed.
