What changed on the 2018 Kia Sorento

Carvana (opens in a new tab) describes the 2018 Sorento as a mostly unchanged third-generation model rather than a redesign or major refresh. Kia's press site (opens in a new tab) lists third-row seats as now standard on AWD models and a Supervision meter cluster with a 7-inch TFT color LCD.

Kelley Blue Book (opens in a new tab) puts used 2018 Sorentos at $9,750 for the L Sport Utility 4D up to $14,400 for the Limited-SXL at a dealership, and lists wheels from 17-inch alloys on the base and LX models, to 18-inch on the EX and 19-inch on the SX. EPA rates the 2018 Sorento at 19 to 24 mpg combined and $2,600 to $3,300 a year in fuel, with front- or all-wheel drive.

Recalls and problems owners report

NHTSA lists three recall campaigns for the 2018 Sorento. 18V656000 covers a cowl crossbar that may be improperly welded, which could let the steering column separate, and Kia's remedy is to replace the crossbar free of charge. 17V784000 covers a side curtain air bag component that may detach during deployment, and 22V703000 covers 2016 to 2022 Sorentos with a tow hitch harness, where moisture on the circuit board may cause an electrical short and a fire, so owners are advised to park outside until it is repaired.

Owners have filed 254 complaints with NHTSA: engine with 106, exterior lighting with 41, unknown or other with 37, electrical system with 30, steering with 26 and fuel and propulsion system with 13. Kelley Blue Book (opens in a new tab) keeps a separate common-problems page for the year, and VinSpectorAI (opens in a new tab) reports the same pattern of engine, headlight and taillight, and electrical complaints.

2018 Sorento against the Santa Fe, Pilot and Highlander

EPA rates the 2018 Sorento at 19 to 24 mpg combined and $2,600 to $3,300 a year in fuel. The 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe lists the same 19 to 24 and $2,600 to $3,300, the Honda Pilot 21 to 23 at $2,700 to $2,950, and the Toyota Highlander 22 to 29 at $2,150 to $2,850. The Highlander is the most efficient of the four on EPA figures, and the Sorento ties the Santa Fe at the bottom of the range.
