Kia Telluride

The Kia Telluride is a three-row mid-size crossover related to the Hyundai Palisade, made since February 2019, with a second generation (LQ2) arriving for 2027. CarGurus says Kia's generous warranty gave original owners peace of mind, but that as with many brand-new models, first-year reliability wasn't impressive, and that other sources rate the 2022 as average with a slight decline in 2023. Federal data shows the 2020 with the most complaints (748) and the 2020 and 2022 tied for the most recalls (7 each).

What the Kia Telluride is and who buys it

Wikipedia (opens in a new tab) describes the Telluride as a mid-size crossover SUV with three-row seating made by Kia since 2019, related to the Hyundai Palisade, replacing the Kia Mohave/Borrego in North America, with a first generation (ON) from 2020, a 2023 refresh, and a second generation (LQ2) arriving for 2027. CarGurus (opens in a new tab) says that when Kia introduced the Telluride for the 2020 model year, it proved beyond any shadow of a doubt that the brand no longer deserved to be a punchline for late-night comics.

Best and worst Telluride model years

Federal data shows the 2020 Telluride with 7 recalls and 748 complaints, both among the highest, covering seats, seat belts, the electrical system and trailer hitch. The 2021 has 5 recalls and 354 complaints, the 2022 has 7 recalls and 319 complaints, the 2023 has 6 and 204, the 2024 has 5 and 215, and the 2025 has 3 and 105.

CarGurus (opens in a new tab) says Kia's generous warranty provided original owners with peace of mind, but that as with many brand-new models, first-year reliability wasn't impressive, and that other sources rate the 2022 Telluride as average in reliability with a slight decline in 2023, the same year Kia updated the SUV's technology. Car Smite (opens in a new tab) says it sorted every Telluride model year into the best, the so-so and the ones to avoid, and that the more recalls and complaints a model year has, the lower its reliability rating drops.

Choosing a year

Complaint counts fall steadily from the 2020 launch to the 2025, and the second-generation 2027 Telluride starts fresh with no track record yet, so its first year or two deserve the same first-year caution CarGurus applies to the 2020.

Background and safety record

What public sources say about the Kia Telluride.

The Kia Telluride is a mid-size crossover SUV with three-row seating manufactured and marketed by Kia since 2019. Positioned above the Sorento, it was previewed as a concept car in 2016, with the production model debuting in early 2019 as a 2020 model. It shares components and specifications with its Hyundai counterpart, the Hyundai Palisade, including its engine, transmission, and wheelbase.

Safety
The 2020 and 2021 model years of the Telluride were awarded "Top Safety Pick" by IIHS, it was later awarded "Top Safety Pick+".
Recalls and problems
In March 2024, Kia recalled over 427,000 Tellurides from 2020 to 2024 model years, due to rollaway risks which the vehicles rolls away when placed in 'P' gear. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, this is because of improper assembly of the intermediate shaft and the right front driveshaft could cause unintended vehicle movement, if the driver failed to engage the parking brake.
Awards
In 2020, the Telluride received the 2020 World Car of the Year as well as Motor Trend's SUV of the Year.

Q01Is there a best year to buy a Kia Telluride?

Federal recall records don't single out a best Kia Telluride model year: recall counts across the 6 published model years checked here stay within a normal range of this nameplate's own average (about 5.5 recalls per year), with no year standing out as notably higher or lower. Recall count is one input, not a purchase verdict. It says nothing about a specific vehicle's price, mileage, accident history or maintenance record.

Q02What are common recall-related problems on the Kia Telluride by model year?

2025: structure, tires, seats. 2024: seats, engine cooling, powertrain, structure. 2023: seats, airbags, electrical system, powertrain. 2022: electrical system, seats, tires, trailer hitch. 2021: seats, airbags, trailer hitch, powertrain. 2020: seats, seat belts, electrical system, trailer hitch.
