MINI John Cooper Works
Car and Driver says the John Cooper Works (JCW) variant of the Mini Cooper is not the most well-rounded sport compact out there, but whether you choose the hatchback or convertible body style, it's still a hoot, with a torque-happy turbo engine and stiffened suspension that make for a lively driving experience and synthetic pops and burbles courtesy of Go-Kart mode, offering 228 horsepower and 280 lb-ft of torque and a 5.9-second 0-60-mph time, ranking #8 in Best Sport Compact Cars behind rivals like the Honda Civic Type R and Volkswagen Golf GTI. MotorTrend says the JCW's new dual-clutch transmission trades away 7 horsepower and an eighth traditional-automatic gear ratio for 52 extra lb-ft of torque and a potentially quicker-witted gearbox, with Sport DCT programming that taps into the navigation map database to preemptively downshift ahead of an upcoming curve or incline, delivering exciting acceleration despite numbers that seem modest by today's standards.
