Nissan Sentra

MotorTrend rates the 2026 Nissan Sentra 9.0/10, ranking it #3 in Best Compact Sedans, saying a heavily updated Sentra arrives for 2026, ushering in a fresh version of the long-standing model that last saw a major redesign in 2020, with upgraded tech and significant styling revisions inside and out aimed at competitors including the Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla, and Kia K4, plus standard adaptive cruise control with ProPilot Assist and a standard 12.3-inch touchscreen, though the drivetrain carries over and there's still no hybrid option. Car and Driver says the new Sentra continues to offer lots of features for the money and is good-looking inside and out, building on its reputation for delivering a satisfying number of features and reasonable comfort at an affordable price, but it remains a disappointment in the engine room, with an underpowered engine, no hybrid powertrain option as in rivals, and an unexciting driving experience.

Background and safety record

What public sources say about the Nissan Sentra.

The Nissan Sentra is a series of automobiles manufactured by the Japanese automaker Nissan since 1982. Since 1999, the Sentra has been categorized as a compact car, while previously it occupied the subcompact class. Until 2006, Sentra was a rebadged version of the Japanese Nissan Sunny for markets outside of Japan, but since the 2013 model year, Sentra is a rebadged version of the Sylphy for markets outside of Japan.

Recalls and problems
On 16 August 2021, PROFECO and Nissan Mexicana issued a recall on 18,857 Sentras of model years 2020 and 2021 in Mexico, due to a manufacturing defect of the steering rods (left or right) which could be bent, resulting in a misalignment in the direction of the car, vibrations while driving, and the breakage of the component that would lead to loss of the unit control.
Safety
The Tsuru/Sentra in its most basic configuration with no airbags for Latin America received 0 stars for adult occupants and 0 stars for infants from Latin NCAP 1.0 in 2013.
Powertrain
The ninth generation Sentra is based on the same platform as the previous generation and carries over the same 2.0-liter MR20DD naturally aspirated inline-four engine producing 149 hp (111 kW) and 146 lb⋅ft of torque. The CVT is also carried over and is retuned for more linear power delivery.

Method: recall counts and their affected components come from the NHTSA Office of Defects Investigation: Recalls API, queried by exact make, model and model year. Complaint counts come from the NHTSA Office of Defects Investigation: Complaints API, same query pattern. Data pulled 2026-09-04.

Known gap: the NHTSA complaints API did not return data for Nissan Sentra model year 2026 when queried for this page: the request itself failed upstream, not returning a genuine zero. Those years are marked "not available" above instead of shown as clean; recall counts for those years are unaffected and come from the separate recalls API, which returned data for every year listed.

Check open recalls by VIN for one particular vehicle.

Q01Is there a best year to buy a Nissan Sentra?

Recall count alone can't answer that: it says nothing about a specific vehicle's price, mileage, accident history or maintenance record. What federal data can say: 2016 carried more. See the model-year table on this page for the exact counts and what they cover.

Q02Which Nissan Sentra model years should I watch for recalls?

The 2016 Nissan Sentra has 6 federal recalls on file, most commonly affecting airbags, electrical system, exterior lighting. Always confirm the open/completed status of every campaign for the specific VIN: a recall on this list may already be repaired on the vehicle in front of you.

Q03What are common recall-related problems on the Nissan Sentra by model year?

2026: seats. 2025: seats, visibility/wipers, door latches, powertrain. 2024: airbags, powertrain, visibility/wipers. 2023: airbags. 2022: structure, steering. 2021: steering, backup camera.

Q04Why do some Nissan Sentra model years show "not available" for complaints?

The NHTSA complaints API did not return data for Nissan Sentra model year 2026 when queried for this page: the request itself failed upstream instead of the count genuinely being zero. Recall counts for those years are unaffected; they come from a separate NHTSA endpoint that returned data for every year listed.

Diagnosing one of these symptoms? The recalled systems above map to this site’s own ownership desks: general, evidence-first guidance that applies regardless of whether the specific vehicle in front of you was ever part of a recall campaign: Buying, records and recalls, Climate and electrical, Brakes, tires and steering, Transmission and drivetrain.

2016 Nissan Sentra owners specifically: see Buying, records and recalls and Climate and electrical.
