What changed on the 2025 BMW 5 Series
MotorTrend (opens in a new tab) says the 2025 5 Series sees few changes from last year: the standard engine is a 255-horsepower, 295-pound-foot turbocharged 2.0-liter four, new exterior paint colors are available, and a plug-in hybrid variant called the 550e joins the lineup alongside a new M5 that uses electrification for its performance. The all-new eighth-generation car arrived a model year earlier.
Kelley Blue Book (opens in a new tab) lists the cheapest 2025 5 Series, the 530i, at a starting sticker price of $59,875 and a Fair Purchase Price of $55,100. EPA rates the 2025 5 Series at 24 to 31 mpg combined and $2,500 to $3,250 a year in fuel, with a plug-in hybrid rated at 34 miles of electric range.
Recalls and problems owners report
NHTSA lists six recall campaigns for the 2025 5 Series. 24V104000 covers an integrated brake system that may malfunction and cause a loss of power brake assist, 24V870000 an air-bag control unit manufactured incorrectly so the air bags may not deploy as intended, which dealers replace, 25V202000 a loose electrical connection between the starter-generator and the battery, and 26V422000 a power-assist brake campaign shared with several other BMW and Mini models. Owners have filed two complaints with NHTSA, about steering and the electrical system, service brakes and wheels. Consumer Reports (opens in a new tab) rates the 2025 5 Series less reliable than other cars from the same model year. Two more, 24V714000 and 26V096000, cover a steering knuckle or spindle arm fault on 2024 to 2025 530i xDrive, 540i xDrive and i5 models and an electrical wiring harness on M5, 550e and i5 models.
