2024 BMW 8 Series
The 2024 BMW 8 Series repeats its 2023 refresh: the 840i has an inline-six and the M850i a 523-horsepower twin-turbo V-8. NHTSA lists two recalls on the 840i, a starter motor and a driveshaft connection, and two complaints. EPA rates it 19 to 24 mpg combined; used prices run about $52,200 to $99,500.
What changed on the 2024 BMW 8 Series
The big update came a year earlier. U.S. News (opens in a new tab) lists the 2023 changes as a refreshed exterior design, a 12.3-inch touch screen made standard and the M8 discontinued, and TopSpeed (opens in a new tab) says that left only a few major upgrades for 2024: an illuminated kidney grille, a larger 12.3-inch center screen, new paint options and new wheels. TopSpeed also points out the car keeps BMW's tablet-style iDrive 7 rather than the widescreen iDrive 8 used in newer BMWs.
MotorTrend (opens in a new tab) says the base 840i is rear-wheel drive while M850i models get standard all-wheel drive, and Car and Driver (opens in a new tab) drove the M850i with its 523-horsepower twin-turbo V8, eight-speed automatic and all-wheel drive, noting it is not as quick as the M8 it replaced but still powerful, with the standard turbocharged inline-six as the alternative. Every 2024 8 Series has a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster and a 12.3-inch touchscreen, and TopSpeed lists the warranty as a typical 48 months or 50,000 miles.
Recalls and problems owners report
NHTSA lists two recall campaigns for the 2024 840i, filed under the trim name rather than 8 Series. 25V644000 covers 2020 to 2025 840i and several other BMW models, where after repeated attempts the starter motor may overheat from an electrical overload, and dealers replace the starter, including on cars repaired under an earlier recall that now need a second repair. 26V525000 covers 2022 to 2026 840i and 840i xDrive and some other BMWs, where the connection between the driveshaft and the rear differential may become damaged, possibly causing a loss of power to the rear wheels or a vehicle rollaway; dealers inspect it and apply adhesive or replace the driveshaft and rear differential.
Owners have filed only two complaints with NHTSA, touching wheels, power train, engine and the fuel system, a thin record because the car is a low-volume luxury coupe. The typical complaint list for older 8 Series generations, such as the electrical and infotainment problems and cooling-system leaks described by Bimmerboom (opens in a new tab), is drawn from earlier cars and should be read as things to ask a seller about, not documented faults of this year. Among 13 owners who reviewed the 2024 car on Kelley Blue Book, sentiment is overwhelmingly positive, with comments such as no problems, just maintenance.
What a 2024 8 Series costs today
Kelley Blue Book (opens in a new tab) puts used 2024 8 Series prices at $52,200 for the 840i xDrive Coupe up to $99,500 for the Alpina B8 xDrive Gran Coupe when bought from a dealership. Trade-in values are much lower, about $40,600 to $51,100, and private-party values run about $48,300 to $59,300. Trade-in offers sit well below dealer asking prices, which matters if you expect to sell the car on quickly.
2024 8 Series against the A7, Panamera and LC
EPA rates the 2024 8 Series at 19 to 24 mpg combined with an annual fuel cost of $3,250 to $4,100. The 2024 Audi A7 is rated 25 combined at about $3,100 a year, the 2024 Porsche Panamera 21 at $3,700, the AMG GT 16 to 21, and the Lexus LC 18 to 29, the top of that range being its hybrid. On EPA figures the 8 Series is less efficient than the A7 and Panamera and more efficient than the AMG GT, and the Lexus LC is the only one of the group with a hybrid version.
