BMW 8 Series

The BMW 8 Series is a range of grand-touring coupes, convertibles and four-door Gran Coupes, revived in 2018 as a second generation after the 1990 original. CarGurus says that on such a new model, high mileage is the thing to avoid rather than any specific year. The 2026 8 Series starts at $96,050 and is rated 19 to 24 mpg combined.

What the BMW 8 Series is and who buys it

Wikipedia (opens in a new tab) describes the 8 Series as a range of grand tourer coupes and convertibles from BMW, introduced in 1990 as the E31, at first only a two-door coupe, with a second generation (G14, G15 and G16) from 2018. Jalopy Talk (opens in a new tab) says that depending on configuration it is a convertible, sports car, small sedan or family sedan, because BMW made a roadster, a four-door touring sedan and a two-door coupe. The 2026 8 Series is offered with a 3.0L six-cylinder in the 840i and a 4.4L V8 in the M850i, rear-wheel or all-wheel drive, and is rated 19 to 24 mpg combined, about $3,250 to $4,100 a year in fuel.

Prices and model years

Kelley Blue Book base prices for the 2026 8 Series are $96,050 for the 840i Gran Coupe, $99,050 for the 840i xDrive Gran Coupe, $106,050 for the 840i coupe and $112,050 for the M850i xDrive. CarGurus (opens in a new tab) says that since the second-generation 8 Series is such a new model that has not gone through a lot of major changes, cars with high mileage are the ones to avoid rather than any specific model years, and Engine Patrol (opens in a new tab) says consumer ratings are quite high for the 2023 model year. Both sites publish a year-by-year list, and CarsCounsel (opens in a new tab) does too.

Rivals

The Car Connection says the Porsche 911's price starts about where the 8's ends, so buyers should budget accordingly. Autoweb (opens in a new tab) lists the Aston Martin DB11 as a grand tourer with a distinct sporty side for a buyer who wouldn't normally get something as mainstream as a BMW, and says the Corvette is a whole different ball game next to an 8 Series that looked like a bargain against the first two rivals.

Questions buyers ask

Which BMW 8 Series years should I avoid?

CarGurus (opens in a new tab) says that because the second generation is so new and has not gone through major changes, high-mileage cars are the ones to avoid rather than any specific year.

Is the BMW 8 Series available as a four-door?

Yes. Wikipedia lists the Gran Coupe among the second generation's body styles, alongside the coupe and convertible.
