The 2016 BMW X4 adds the M40i, a 355-horsepower turbo six with sharper suspension, above the 300-horsepower xDrive35i. NHTSA lists two recalls, child-seat anchors and a water-pump connector, and 10 complaints. EPA rates it 21 to 23 mpg combined, and used prices run about $11,900 to $16,100.
What changed on the 2016 BMW X4
Carvana (opens in a new tab) calls 2016 the second model year of the first-generation X4 (2015 to 2018) and says the biggest change is the new M40i flagship, with a 355-horsepower turbocharged six, sharper suspension tuning, rear-biased all-wheel drive, a sport exhaust, sport seats and more standard equipment. It lists the xDrive35i as the smoother 300-horsepower six with standard Harman Kardon audio, below the four-cylinder xDrive28i.
BMW Blog (opens in a new tab) covers the model-year update for the X3 and X4 as extended standard equipment, new equipment lines, new options and a Chestnut Bronze metallic paint. CarBuzz (opens in a new tab) notes the car had a short first generation of five model years before the redesigned G02 arrived for 2019.
Recalls and problems owners report
NHTSA lists two recall campaigns for the 2016 X4. 16V333000 is a child-seat campaign across several BMW models in which dealers weld a reinforcing bracket to the lower anchor bars and the vehicle body, free of charge. 24V608000 is a 2024 campaign on cars with an improperly sealed water-pump electrical connector that can be exposed to water and short-circuit, with dealers inspecting and replacing the water pump and plug connector and installing a protective shield.
Owners have filed 10 complaints with NHTSA on this model year: electrical system with 4, engine and engine cooling with 2, engine with 2 and suspension with 2. ProblemsByVin (opens in a new tab) scores it 8.4 out of 10, above the segment average, and finds no systemic severe-failure pattern in the complaint record. Bimmerboom (opens in a new tab) advises monitoring oil levels and warns of oil leaks and premature battery failure, which are general ownership cautions for the model rather than documented defects of this year.
What a 2016 X4 costs today
