BMW X5
MotorTrend says BMW shocked the world when it introduced the X5 as its first-ever SUV for the 2000 model year, and that the well-rounded 2026 X5 was most recently refreshed for 2024, so it's not expecting a redesign for another year or two. Car and Driver says BMW is a brand known for its excellent road manners, and the 2026 X5 is satisfying to drive, if not as sharp-edged as its smaller siblings, rolling into the new year without any significant changes over last year's model. U.S. News gives the 2026 X5 a #2 ranking within the Luxury Midsize SUVs category, and says BMW covers it with a four-year/50,000-mile limited warranty.

2027 BMW X5
The 2027 X5 is a full ground-up redesign, not a running change, so the outgoing generation's trims (sDrive40i, xDrive40i, xDrive50e, M60i and M Competition) and specs no longer apply. The new X5 drops the three-row option (two rows only) and is the first BMW nameplate offered with five propulsion types across its life cycle: gas, diesel, plug-in hybrid, all-electric (iX5) and hydrogen (iX5 Hydrogen, later). The base engine is a 394-hp, 428-lb-ft turbo inline-six with standard RWD and an 8-speed automatic.

Method: recall counts and their affected components come from the NHTSA Office of Defects Investigation: Recalls API, queried by exact make, model and model year. Complaint counts come from the NHTSA Office of Defects Investigation: Complaints API, same query pattern. Data pulled 2026-09-04.
Known gap: the NHTSA complaints API did not return data for BMW X5 model years 2015, 2026 when queried for this page: the request itself failed upstream, not returning a genuine zero. Those years are marked "not available" above instead of shown as clean; recall counts for those years are unaffected and come from the separate recalls API, which returned data for every year listed.
Check open recalls by VIN for one particular vehicle.
Q01Is there a best year to buy a BMW X5?
Recall count alone can't answer that: it says nothing about a specific vehicle's price, mileage, accident history or maintenance record. What federal data can say: 2026, 2022 carried fewer recalls than this model's own average, while 2021, 2020, 2019 carried more. See the model-year table on this page for the exact counts and what they cover.
Q02Which BMW X5 model years should I watch for recalls?
The 2021 BMW X5 has 12 federal recalls on file, most commonly affecting electrical system, brakes, backup camera; The 2020 BMW X5 has 11 federal recalls on file, most commonly affecting steering, backup camera, electrical system; The 2019 BMW X5 has 13 federal recalls on file, most commonly affecting electrical system, backup camera, equipment. Always confirm the open/completed status of every campaign for the specific VIN: a recall on this list may already be repaired on the vehicle in front of you.
Q03Which BMW X5 model years have the cleanest federal recall record?
The 2026 BMW X5 has 2 recalls on file; The 2022 BMW X5 has 1 recall on file: below this model's own average of 6.5. A shorter list on file as of this page's data pull is not a guarantee against a future recall.
Q04What are common recall-related problems on the BMW X5 by model year?
2026: visibility/wipers, airbags. 2025: stability control, equipment, seat belts, brakes. 2024: stability control, airbags, structure, equipment. 2023: seats, visibility/wipers, powertrain. 2022: visibility/wipers. 2021: electrical system, brakes, backup camera, seats.
Q05Why do some BMW X5 model years show "not available" for complaints?
The NHTSA complaints API did not return data for BMW X5 model years 2015, 2026 when queried for this page: the request itself failed upstream instead of the count genuinely being zero. Recall counts for those years are unaffected; they come from a separate NHTSA endpoint that returned data for every year listed.
