2018 BMW X6
The 2018 BMW X6 is a subtle update of the coupe-style SUV redesigned in 2015, adding trapezoidal tailpipes on six-cylinder versions and an option of 21-inch run-flat wheels for M Sport models. Four recalls apply, including wheel bolts that may not be properly torqued. It rates 16 to 21 mpg combined, and resale value is about $20,000.
What changed on the 2018 BMW X6
Car and Driver (opens in a new tab) says the X6 was totally redesigned for 2015 and that the updates for 2018 are subtle: new trapezoidal tailpipes on six-cylinder versions and the option of 21-inch wheels with run-flat tires for M Sport models. Its verdict is that the X6 spoils occupants with a posh cabin and a host of standard features, but that its unusual styling and so-so handling might put off some buyers. The lineup on this site's EPA data is a 3.0-liter six-cylinder and a 4.4-liter V8, with rear-wheel or all-wheel drive.
Recalls and complaints
NHTSA lists four recalls on the 2018 X6. 18V614 covers 2018 to 2019 sDrive35i, xDrive35i, xDrive50i and X6 M vehicles where the wheel bolts may not be torqued properly. 18V439 covers a pivot bolt on the front lower control arm on 2018 X5 and X6 sDrive35i vehicles. 17V727 covers front suspension bolts that may not have been properly tightened on 2018 X5, X5 M, X6 and X6 M vehicles. 19V823 concerns the rear seat lower anchor bars used to secure child seats on 2015 to 2019 X6 models. Three of the four are fastener recalls, so it is worth confirming the wheel and suspension work was done and the car drives straight.
NHTSA has only four complaints on this model year, one each about power train, tires, steering, suspension, service brakes and an unclassified fault, which is too few to show a pattern. Bimmerboom (opens in a new tab) reports that RepairPal rates the X6's reliability at 3.5 out of 5, meaning it has some issues but is not the worst in its class. Kelley Blue Book (opens in a new tab) rates an X6 with 84,000 to 96,000 miles as a medium risk of major repair.
What a 2018 X6 costs
Kelley Blue Book (opens in a new tab) says a 2018 X6 has depreciated $6,519, or 24 percent, in three years, leaving a resale value of $20,000 and a trade-in value of $15,850, in the 75th to 100th percentile for depreciation among 2018 SUVs. The EPA rates it 16 to 21 mpg combined at $3,700 to $4,850 a year in fuel on fueleconomy.gov (opens in a new tab), compared with 15 to 21 mpg ($3,700 to $5,150) for the 2018 Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class and 17 to 22 mpg ($3,500 to $4,550) for the Porsche Cayenne, so the three cost about the same to run.
