2015 Ford F150
The 2015 Ford F-150 is the first aluminum-body generation: lighter, with a new 2.7-liter twin-turbo EcoBoost V-6 with stop-start, a 360-degree camera and an 8-inch information screen. NHTSA lists 14 recalls, including door latches, seat-belt pretensioners, block-heater cables and a brake master cylinder, and 1,425 complaints led by brakes. What changed on the 2015 Ford F-150
Cars.com (opens in a new tab) says Chrysler, GM and Toyota had each refreshed or redesigned their half-tons in the prior 18 months, and that the new F-150 brings interior material and design changes, new electronics behind a high-tech information center and new features at almost all trim levels. The two optional EcoBoost engines are an all-new 2.7-liter twin-turbo V-6, standard with stop-start, and the familiar 3.5-liter EcoBoost, and a new 8-inch information screen sits between the tachometer and speedometer.
Ford-Trucks.com (opens in a new tab) adds that the aluminum body panels make the truck lighter, so the new engines pull about 700 pounds less, and that a new 360-degree camera system uses cameras in the grille, tailgate and under each mirror. EPA rates the 2015 F-150 at 17 to 22 mpg combined and $2,850 to $3,650 a year in fuel, and KBB lists 15/21 to 18/25 mpg city and highway.
Recalls and problems owners report
NHTSA lists 14 recall campaigns for the 2015 F-150, filed under F-150. The safety-restraint ones are 15V867000, a pretensioner cable not properly crimped on a front seat-belt anchorage, 17V526000, a left rear inflatable seat-belt buckle inadequately attached, and 18V568000, where sparks from a front seat-belt pretensioner could ignite B-pillar carpeting or insulation, for which dealers remove the insulation. The door ones are 17V652000, a bent actuation cable or latch that can freeze and let doors open while driving, and 17V331000, accessory door handle covers that may unlatch the doors in a side impact. Others include 15V614000, adaptive cruise control that may falsely detect an obstacle and brake unexpectedly, 15V279000, an improperly riveted steering intermediate shaft, 20V332000, a brake master cylinder that may leak fluid into the booster, and three block-heater campaigns (18V894000, 19V278000, 20V098000) for corrosion, damage or a wrong location.
Owners have filed 1,425 complaints with NHTSA on this model year: service brakes with 309, engine with 238, power train with 198, unknown or other with 167, structure with 142 and electrical system with 135. Autojunket (opens in a new tab) calls the year a first-year redesign with known issues in its EcoBoost engines and 6-speed transmission, and Consumer Reports (opens in a new tab) quotes owners describing an engine manifold-cover problem that Ford would not recall.
What a 2015 F-150 costs today
Kelley Blue Book (opens in a new tab) lists the cheapest 2015 F-150 Regular Cab, the XL, at a Fair Purchase Price of $10,300, with trade-in values from about $4,225 to $12,300 and private-party values from about $9,075 to $15,850 depending on cab and trim.
2015 F-150 against the Silverado, Ram 1500 and Tundra
EPA rates the 2015 F-150 at 17 to 22 mpg combined and $2,850 to $3,650 a year in fuel. The 2015 Chevrolet Silverado rates 17 to 20 at $3,100 to $3,650, the Ram 1500 15 to 24 at $2,950 to $4,800 and the Toyota Tundra 15 to 17 at $3,650 to $4,150. On EPA figures the F-150's range sits between the Silverado's and the Ram 1500's, the Ram reaches the highest figure at 24, and the Tundra is the thirstiest.
