2024 Honda Pilot
The 2024 Honda Pilot carries over unchanged from its 2023 redesign: a 285-horsepower V-6, a 10-speed automatic and available all-wheel drive. NHTSA lists six recalls, including a steering rack, driver's seat frame and fuel filler neck, and 114 complaints. Consumer Reports rates it average; used prices start near $31,800.
What changed on the 2024 Honda Pilot
MotorTrend (opens in a new tab) says Honda's largest SUV carries over into 2024 unchanged after being redesigned for 2023, when it arrived with rugged styling, an updated V-6 and a new 10-speed automatic, plus Sport, Tow and Trail drive modes, hill descent control and an available improved all-wheel-drive system with more off-road capability. It found the interior austere despite new tech and higher-quality materials, pointing to the small dash-mounted infotainment displays.
Car and Driver (opens in a new tab) gives the powertrain as a 285-horsepower V-6 with the 10-speed, front-wheel drive standard and all-wheel drive optional, with a 7.0-inch touchscreen and a 7.0-inch digital gauge cluster standard. KBB lists 18/23 to 19/25 mpg city and highway, and EPA rates the Pilot at 20 to 22 mpg combined and $2,850 to $3,100 a year in fuel.
Recalls and problems owners report
NHTSA lists six recall campaigns for the 2024 Pilot. The steering one, 23V735000, is a manufacturing error that can leave a loose ball bearing in the gear box, possibly causing loss of steering control or steering lock-up, and dealers replace the electric power steering rack. Two cover the driver's seat: 24V859000 and 26V054000, where the driver's seat cushion frame may not have been tightened properly and leave an unsecured seat. Others are 24V900000, where the fuel filler neck tube and pipe may separate and leak fuel, 25V031000, a fuel-injection control-unit software error that may stall the engine or cut power, and 25V391000, a brake pedal pivot pin not secured properly that can let the pedal shift out of position.
Owners have filed 114 complaints with NHTSA on this model year, led by seat belts with 24, then unknown or other with 22, steering with 20, forward collision avoidance with 17, service brakes with 13 and power train with 12. Consumer Reports (opens in a new tab) rates the 2024 Pilot about average for reliability compared with other cars from the same model year, and ProblemsByVin (opens in a new tab) scores it 6.6 out of 10, around the segment average.
What a 2024 Pilot costs today
Kelley Blue Book (opens in a new tab) lists the cheapest 2024 Pilot, the Sport, at a Fair Purchase Price of $31,800, with trade-in values of about $26,800 to $35,800 and private-party values of about $29,900 to $39,700 depending on trim. The steering-rack and seat-frame recalls are the two to verify on any used example.
2024 Pilot against the Grand Highlander, Telluride, Palisade and Ascent
EPA rates the 2024 Pilot at 20 to 22 mpg combined and $2,850 to $3,100 a year. The 2024 Toyota Grand Highlander rates 22 to 36 at $1,750 to $2,850, the top figure being its hybrid, the Kia Telluride 20 to 22 at $2,850 to $3,100, the Hyundai Palisade 21 to 22 at $2,850 to $2,950 and the Subaru Ascent 21 to 22 at $2,850 to $2,950, sold only with all-wheel drive. On EPA figures the Pilot matches the Telluride and trails the Palisade and Ascent by about a mile per gallon, and the Grand Highlander hybrid is far more efficient than any of them.
