Land Rover vehicle research

The Land Rover vehicle research desk indexes 3 current EPA model families for model years 2026–2027, totaling 15 certification records across 15 model/option labels. Current Land Rover certification data spans Premium fuel type and 4-Wheel Drive, All-Wheel Drive drivetrains, with combined efficiency of 17–22 MPG/MPGe. The archive extends further back with 7 additional model-year records across 3 Land Rover models. 3 dedicated model hubs break this down by nameplate, and each family page adds its own 12-answer decision desk covering configuration choice, ownership, maintenance and used buying. Every figure here traces back to its own EPA row or dated manufacturer source, never averaged across the make.

Recall record across the lineup

Land Rover: which models carry more or fewer federal safety recalls than the brand’s own average.

ModelAverage recalls per model-yearTotal recalls on fileModel years covered
Land Rover Range Rover6.37512
Land Rover Defender6.0427
Land Rover Discovery3.93910

Method: each model’s average is computed from the same NHTSA Office of Defects Investigation: Recalls API model-year data shown on that model’s own hub, queried by exact make, model and model year. Data pulled 2026-09-04. Models with fewer than 3 published model years of recall data are excluded from this comparison.

Q01Which Land Rover models have the most federal recalls?

Across the 3 Land Rover nameplates checked here, recall rates stay within a normal range of each other (about 5.4 recalls per model-year on average), with no single model standing out as notably higher or lower. Recall count is one input, not a purchase verdict.

About the brand

About Land Rover.

Land Rover is a brand of predominantly four-wheel drive, off-road capable vehicles, owned by British multinational car manufacturer Jaguar Land Rover (JLR), since 2008 a subsidiary of India based Tata Motors. JLR builds Land Rovers in Brazil, China, India, Slovakia, and the United Kingdom. The Land Rover name was created in 1948 by the Rover Company for a utilitarian 4WD off-road vehicle.

History
Originally, these vehicles were simply called the 'Land Rover' – an off-road capable car model of the Rover Company. As 'Land Rover' became established as a brand, the 'Series' indication later became a retronym model name. The Range Rover was introduced in 1970, and the company became a British Leyland subsidiary in 1978.
Lineup
Land Rover's lineup grew outward from the utilitarian original 1948 Land Rover: the more upmarket Range Rover arrived in 1970, the mid-range Discovery in 1989, and the entry-level Freelander in 1997, before the Defender itself was refreshed in 1990 and named after the "One Ten" and "Ninety" wheelbase models it replaced. For nearly 50 years, from 1948 to 1997, every Land Rover and Range Rover used the brand's trademark boxed-section ladder frame; that changed as the Freelander introduced a monocoque body, and by 2017 the third-generation Discovery had also moved to unibody construction, ending body-on-frame Land Rovers entirely after the original Defender's production ceased in 2016. A modern Defender returned for the 2020 model year following a three-year gap, offered again in short- and long-wheelbase form. Today the brand runs two clear product lines: Land Rover (Defender, Discovery, Discovery Sport) for rugged, off-road-focused models, and Range Rover, now sold as its own sub-brand with four distinct models (Range Rover, Range Rover Sport, Range Rover Velar, Range Rover Evoque) covering the luxury end of the same underlying SUV market. Land Rover also broke a 62-year all-wheel-drive-only tradition in 2010 by introducing two-wheel-drive Freelander and Evoque variants for markets that didn't need off-road capability.
Safety
Model-by-model road accident statistics from the UK Department for Transport published in 2006 showed that the Land Rover Defender was one of the safest cars on British roads as measured by chance of death in two-car injury accidents.
Manufacturing
Jaguar Land Rover manufactures Land Rover cars in plants in five countries. In the United Kingdom the Range Rover, Range Rover Sport and Range Rover Velar are built at their Solihull plant near Birmingham and the Discovery Sport and Evoque are built at their Halewood plant near Liverpool.
Electric vehicles
Integrated Electric Rear Axle Drive (ERAD) technology, dubbed e-terrain technology, will allow the vehicle to move off without starting the engine as well as supplying extra power over tough terrain. Land Rover's Diesel ERAD Hybrid was developed as part of a multimillion-pound project supported by the UK Government's Energy Saving Trust, under the low carbon research and development programme.
