What changed on the 2025 Mazda CX-90

Car and Driver (opens in a new tab) says that in its second year the CX-90 adds a Premium Sport trim replacing the plain Premium with the standard engine, makes the second-row bench seat more widely available, and makes the 12.3-inch infotainment display standard except on the base model. Bountiful Mazda (opens in a new tab) lists the standard 3.3-liter turbocharged inline-six at 280 horsepower and 332 lb-ft of torque, and Wellesley Mazda (opens in a new tab) says it reaches 340 horsepower in higher trims.

Kelley Blue Book (opens in a new tab) lists the 3.3 Turbo Select at a starting sticker price of $39,575 and a Fair Purchase Price of $37,100, with fuel economy of 23/28 to 24/28 mpg city and highway. EPA rates the 2025 CX-90 at 25 mpg combined and $2,500 to $3,100 a year in fuel, with 26 miles of electric range on the plug-in hybrid.

Recalls and problems owners report

NHTSA lists two recall campaigns for the 2025 CX-90. 24V814000 covers a dash electrical supply unit whose software means the defroster, seat belt warning, 360-degree view monitor and plug-in battery cooling may not work properly at startup, and dealers reprogram the unit. 25V568000 covers mild hybrid models whose fuel gauge may display an inaccurate fuel reading, fixed with a body control module software update.

Owners have filed 43 complaints with NHTSA, 30 on the CX-90 and 13 on the CX-90 PHEV: electrical system with 10, engine with 9, unknown or other and service brakes with 8 each, and forward collision avoidance with 7. ProblemsByVin (opens in a new tab) counts 30 on the CX-90 name alone and names brakes as the most-reported issue, and Kelley Blue Book (opens in a new tab) keeps a common-problems page for the year.

2025 CX-90 against the Grand Highlander, Pilot, Telluride and Ascent

EPA rates the 2025 CX-90 at 25 mpg combined and $2,500 to $3,100 a year in fuel. The Honda Pilot lists 20 to 22 at $2,850 to $3,100, the Kia Telluride 20 to 22 at $2,850 to $3,100, the Subaru Ascent 21 to 22 at $2,850 to $2,950, and the Toyota Grand Highlander 22 to 36 at $1,750 to $2,850 including its hybrid. The CX-90 beats the Pilot, Telluride and Ascent on mpg and trails the Grand Highlander hybrid.
