REREV (opens in a new tab) says the single biggest documented failure across the Solterra lineup is a wheel hub-bolt defect on 2023 models, which led to two separate NHTSA recall campaigns before it was fully resolved, and that in June 2022 the automaker issued a recall for the same issue on 403 Solterras, warning that hub bolts can loosen to the point where a wheel can detach even after low-mileage use. It says the 2023 carries the highest complaint load on CarComplaints, at 41 reports, and the most recall campaigns of any year, and advises running the VIN through NHTSA's recall checker to confirm the hub-bolt recall (WRE-23) and the HVAC recall (WRD-25) are both closed on 2023 to 2025 cars. The Motor Guy (opens in a new tab) says the second recall exists because some cars that already had the 2022 port repair were left with under-torqued bolts, and that both recalls are limited to 1,182 2023 Solterras built between March 30 and June 4, 2022. Kelley Blue Book (opens in a new tab) reported that Toyota sold a handful of bZ4X SUVs before discovering the wheels could separate from the car while driving, the same underlying defect the Solterra shares.
