What the Tesla Cybertruck is
Wikipedia (opens in a new tab) describes the Cybertruck as a battery-electric full-size pickup truck built by Tesla at Gigafactory Texas in Austin since November 2023, model years from 2024, a four-door crew cab with flat, unpainted stainless steel body panels, first shown as a prototype in November 2019. It has an 816-volt, 150-Ah battery, an NACS connector, DC charging up to 250 kW at 400 volts and 350 kW at 800 volts, and rear-motor, dual-motor and Cyberbeast layouts. The 2026 Cybertruck is rated 78 to 79 mpg-equivalent by the EPA, about $950 to $1,000 a year in fuel, and Kelley Blue Book base prices are $82,235 for the all-wheel-drive model and $117,235 for the Cyberbeast.
Recalls and model years
Federal data lists 11 recalls on the 2024, covering the electrical system, structure, exterior lighting and vehicle speed control, and 169 complaints, 3 recalls on the 2025 covering structure, exterior lighting and wheels, and 2 on the 2026. CarGurus (opens in a new tab) says that from a structural safety update to reliability improvements and safety upgrades, the later model years benefited from the lessons learned in the first production run, and that whatever the year, shoppers should get an insurance quote before they commit, because it is the ownership cost most likely to surprise a first-time buyer.
Choosing a year
On recalls the choice is clear: the first-year 2024 carries the longest list, and the 2025 and 2026 far fewer. Check the VIN for open campaigns on any 2024, particularly the structure and exterior lighting ones.

Background and safety record
What public sources say about the Tesla Cybertruck.
The Tesla Cybertruck is a battery-electric full-size pickup truck manufactured by Tesla, Inc. since 2023. It was presented as a prototype concept in November 2019, with an angular design composed of flat, unpainted stainless steel body panels, drawing comparisons to low-polygon computer models. While scheduled for production in late 2021, the vehicle had multiple delays before entering limited production at Gigafactory Texas in 2023, with customer deliveries beginning in November 2023.
- Recalls and problems
- As of October 2025, the Cybertruck has been subject to ten recalls. Four have been resolved with software updates which are pushed over-the-air to the vehicle, but the remaining have required owners to arrange for a repair of their vehicle.
- Reception
- The Cybertruck has been criticized for its poor build quality, malfunctions, safety problems, and price hikes following reservations.
- Sales
- As of June 2024, a total of 11,688 Tesla Cybertrucks had been sold, making it the top-selling electric pickup truck in the United States during the first half of the year. By October 2024, industry estimates placed cumulative sales at approximately 27,185. However, by November 2024, sales numbers were reported to be lower than initially anticipated, prompting a price reduction.
- Design
- According to Musk, the design of the Cybertruck was inspired by Blade Runner and "Wet Nellie", the Lotus Esprit driven by James Bond in The Spy Who Loved Me, which doubled as a submarine.
- Exterior
- The 300-series stainless-steel panels have a thickness of 0.071 and 0.055 in (1.8 and 1.4 mm) for the doors and body, respectively, according to a factory tour video. These panels cannot be stamped like conventional automobile parts, but instead are laser-cut and then bent along straight lines.
- Powertrain
- Tesla has stated that it employs a platform-based approach to the Cybertruck’s powertrain architecture, using a standardized set of components across all drivetrain variants. These include a single design each for the permanent magnet motor, induction motor, motor inverter, and the 15:1 reduction gear set. All powertrain components are integrated into a liquid-cooled subassembly.
- Interior
- The Cybertruck has five seats, two in the front and a three-seat bench in the back row. The vehicle has an 18.5 in (47 cm) touch-screen display in the front for most of the climate, media, and vehicle controls. AWD and Cyberbeast configurations also have a 9.4 in (24 cm) touch-screen for the rear seat passengers.

Method: recall counts and their affected components come from the NHTSA Office of Defects Investigation: Recalls API, queried by exact make, model and model year. Complaint counts come from the NHTSA Office of Defects Investigation: Complaints API, same query pattern. Data pulled 2026-09-04.
Known gap: the NHTSA complaints API did not return data for Tesla Cybertruck model years 2025, 2026 when queried for this page: the request itself failed upstream, not returning a genuine zero. Those years are marked "not available" above instead of shown as clean; recall counts for those years are unaffected and come from the separate recalls API, which returned data for every year listed.
Check open recalls by VIN for one particular vehicle.
Q01Is there a best year to buy a Tesla Cybertruck?
Recall count alone can't answer that: it says nothing about a specific vehicle's price, mileage, accident history or maintenance record. What federal data can say: 2026 carried fewer recalls than this model's own average, while 2024 carried more. See the model-year table on this page for the exact counts and what they cover.
Q02Which Tesla Cybertruck model years should I watch for recalls?
The 2024 Tesla Cybertruck has 11 federal recalls on file, most commonly affecting electrical system, structure, exterior lighting. Always confirm the open/completed status of every campaign for the specific VIN: a recall on this list may already be repaired on the vehicle in front of you.
Q03Which Tesla Cybertruck model years have the cleanest federal recall record?
The 2026 Tesla Cybertruck has 2 recalls on file: below this model's own average of 5.3. A shorter list on file as of this page's data pull is not a guarantee against a future recall.
Q04What are common recall-related problems on the Tesla Cybertruck by model year?
2026: exterior lighting, wheels. 2025: structure, exterior lighting, wheels. 2024: electrical system, structure, exterior lighting, Vehicle Speed Control.
Q05Why do some Tesla Cybertruck model years show "not available" for complaints?
The NHTSA complaints API did not return data for Tesla Cybertruck model years 2025, 2026 when queried for this page: the request itself failed upstream instead of the count genuinely being zero. Recall counts for those years are unaffected; they come from a separate NHTSA endpoint that returned data for every year listed.
