Tesla vehicle research
The Tesla vehicle research desk indexes 5 current EPA model families for model years 2026–2027, totaling 10 certification records across 10 model/option labels. Current Tesla certification data spans Electricity fuel type and All-Wheel Drive, Rear-Wheel Drive drivetrains, with combined efficiency of 78–124 MPG/MPGe. The archive extends further back with 22 additional model-year records across 5 Tesla models. 5 dedicated model hubs break this down by nameplate, and each family page adds its own 12-answer decision desk covering configuration choice, ownership, maintenance and used buying. Every figure here traces back to its own EPA row or dated manufacturer source, never averaged across the make.

Recall record across the lineup
Tesla: which models carry more or fewer federal safety recalls than the brand’s own average.
| Model | Average recalls per model-year | Total recalls on file | Model years covered |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tesla Model 3 | 13.9 | 139 | 10 |
| Tesla Model Y | 12.9 | 103 | 8 |
| Tesla Model S | 11.4 | 125 | 11 |
| Tesla Model X | 11.4 | 125 | 11 |
| Tesla Cybertruck | 5.3 | 16 | 3 |
Method: each model’s average is computed from the same NHTSA Office of Defects Investigation: Recalls API model-year data shown on that model’s own hub, queried by exact make, model and model year. Data pulled 2026-09-04. Models with fewer than 3 published model years of recall data are excluded from this comparison.

Q01Which Tesla models have the most federal recalls?
Across the 5 Tesla nameplates checked here, recall rates stay within a normal range of each other (about 11.0 recalls per model-year on average), with no single model standing out as notably higher or lower. Recall count is one input, not a purchase verdict.

About the brand
About Tesla.
Tesla, Inc. is an American multinational automotive and clean energy company. Headquartered in Austin, Texas, it designs, manufactures, and sells battery electric vehicles (BEVs), stationary battery energy storage devices from home to grid-scale, solar panels and solar shingles, and related products and services. The company was incorporated in July 2003 by Martin Eberhard and Marc Tarpenning as Tesla Motors.
- History
- The company was incorporated as Tesla Motors, Inc., on July 1, 2003, by Martin Eberhard and Marc Tarpenning. They served as chief executive officer and chief financial officer, respectively. Eberhard said that he wanted to build "a car manufacturer that is also a technology company", with its core technologies as "the battery, the computer software, and the proprietary motor".
- Lineup
- Tesla built its brand from the top down: the original two-seat Roadster (2005-2009) proved an electric car could be fast and desirable, followed by the Model S sedan in 2012 and Model X SUV in 2015 as flagship, high-priced vehicles meant to fund the company's move toward the mass market. The Model 3 sedan arrived in 2017 and the Model Y crossover in 2020 as the lower-priced volume models that plan was built around, and the Model Y has since become the best-selling vehicle nameplate in the world by units, not just the best-selling EV. Tesla's current available lineup for individual buyers is now the Model 3, Model Y, and Cybertruck, alongside the Semi heavy truck for commercial buyers; the original Model S and Model X have both since been discontinued as Tesla concentrated production on its higher-volume nameplates. Every current Tesla shares the same core approach: a dedicated EV platform, in-house battery cell development (including the 4680 cell format), over-the-air software updates, and the Supercharger fast-charging network, now used as the basis for the North American Charging Standard adopted industry-wide by rival automakers. Tesla became the world's most valuable automaker by market capitalization in 2020 and has repeatedly exceeded a $1 trillion valuation since 2021.
- Reception
- In September 2023, a Tesla vehicle was the second product ever reviewed by the Mozilla Foundation that failed all of their privacy criteria. A Tesla owner filed a lawsuit in 2023 following a Reuters report that Tesla employees shared "highly invasive videos and images recorded by customers' car cameras" with one another.
- Technology
- Tesla is highly vertically integrated and develops many components in-house, such as batteries, motors, and software.
- Facilities
- The company operates seven large factories and about a dozen smaller factories around the world. As of December 2024, the company also operates more than 1,350 retail stores, galleries, service, delivery, and body shop locations globally.
- Environmental violations
- In 2019, the United States Environmental Protection Agency fined Tesla for hazardous waste violations that occurred in 2017. In June 2019, Tesla began negotiating penalties for 19 environmental violations from the Bay Area Air Quality Management District; the violations took place around Tesla Fremont's paint shop, where there had been at least four fires between 2014 and 2019.
