Method: each model’s average is computed from the same NHTSA Office of Defects Investigation: Recalls API model-year data shown on that model’s own hub, queried by exact make, model and model year. Data pulled 2026-09-04. Models with fewer than 3 published model years of recall data are excluded from this comparison.

Q01Which Volvo models have the most federal recalls?

Across the 7 Volvo nameplates checked here, recall rates stay within a normal range of each other (about 3.3 recalls per model-year on average), with no single model standing out as notably higher or lower. Recall count is one input, not a purchase verdict.

About the brand

About Volvo.

Aktiebolaget Volvo, doing business as Volvo Group is a Swedish multinational manufacturing corporation headquartered in Gothenburg. While its core activity is the production, distribution and sale of trucks, buses and construction equipment, Volvo also supplies marine and industrial drive systems and financial services. In 2016, it was the world's second-largest manufacturer of heavy-duty trucks through its subsidiary Volvo Trucks.

History
The brand name Volvo was originally registered as a trademark in May 1911, with the intention to be used for a new series of SKF ball bearings. It means "I roll" in Latin, conjugated from "volvere". The idea was short-lived, and SKF decided to simply use its initials as the trademark for all its bearing products.
Lineup
Volvo was founded on the concept of safety in 1927 in Gothenburg, Sweden, and that positioning has defined the brand's marketing and engineering ever since, alongside its Swedish design heritage; Volvo is credited with inventing and giving away the patent for the modern three-point seatbelt in 1959 rather than keeping it proprietary, a decision the company still points to as proof of its safety-first identity. Volvo Cars split from its former parent AB Volvo (which kept the separate truck, bus and construction-equipment businesses) in 1999, when it was sold to Ford for $6.47 billion; Ford sold it at a loss to China's Geely Holding in 2010 for $1.8 billion, and Volvo Cars went public on the Nasdaq Stockholm exchange in 2021 with Geely retaining majority ownership. The current lineup uses a clear numeric hierarchy: 40-series models (XC40, C40) are compact, 60-series (S60, V60, XC60) are mid-size, and 90-series (S90, V90, XC90) are Volvo's largest sedans, wagons and SUVs, with "XC" marking SUVs and plain numbers marking sedans/wagons. Volvo also owns 18% of electric-performance spinoff Polestar and has pushed hybrid and plug-in-hybrid powertrains across most of its current lineup as part of a broader, though since softened, commitment to eventually sell only electrified vehicles.
Corporate
Volvo Trucks (midsize-duty trucks for regional transportation and heavy-duty trucks for long-distance transportation, as well as heavy-duty trucks for the construction work segment) Mack Trucks (light-duty trucks for close distribution and heavy-duty trucks for long-distance transportation) Renault Trucks (heavy-duty trucks for regional transportations and heavy-duty trucks for the construction work segment) Arquus (military vehicles) Dongfeng Commercial Vehicles (45% ownership) (trucks) VE Commercial Vehicles Limited Ltd., India (VECV), a joint venture between Volvo Group and Eicher Motors Limited in which Volvo holds 45.6% ownership (trucks and buses) Volvo Construction Equipment (construction equipment) SDLG (70% ownership) (construction equipment) Volvo Group Venture Capital (corporate investment company) Volvo Buses (complete buses and bus chassis for city traffic, line traffic and tourist traffic) Volvo Financial Services (customer financing, inter-group banking, as real estate administration) Volvo Penta (marine engine systems for leisure boats and commercial shipping, diesel engines and drive systems for industrial applications) Volvo Energy (management and support for electric vehicles, batteries and electrification networks) According to the company, in 2021 almost two-thirds (62%) of its revenue came from trucks and services related to them.
Controversies
Volvo has provided heavy construction equipment, specifically excavators and bulldozers, through authorized dealers that have been deployed in destroying Palestinian residences and public facilities, with incidents documented in East Jerusalem and communities such as Umm al-Khair and Hebron.
