Volvo S90
The Volvo S90 is an executive sedan sold in the U.S. since 2016, and Car and Driver reported that Volvo plans to cancel U.S. orders of the S90, likely making 2025 its final American model year, as tariffs push the brand to drop sedans in favor of SUVs. Federal data shows the 2017 and 2019 with the most recalls (4 each), and the electric Volvo ES90 is its successor.
What the Volvo S90 is and why it's ending in the U.S.
Wikipedia (opens in a new tab) describes the S90 as an executive sedan made by Volvo since 2016 on the SPA platform, with U.S. model years from 2017, an estate version called the V90, and lists the Volvo ES90 as its successor. Car and Driver (opens in a new tab) reported that Volvo will cancel U.S. orders of the S90 next year, likely making 2025 the sedan's final U.S. model year, and that with the S60 also being discontinued after the 2025 model year, Volvo would no longer offer any sedan in the U.S. It notes Volvo revealed the ES90 as an electric sedan built in China, which casts doubt on its own U.S. arrival. CarBuzz (opens in a new tab) says the schedule for the discontinuation was reportedly accelerated after tariffs took hold, making this year the S90's final year sooner than expected.
Best and worst S90 model years
Federal data shows the 2017 S90 and the 2019 with 4 recalls each, the most of any year, covering the electrical system, equipment, air bags, seats and the forward collision system, and the 2016 and 2018 with 2 each. Recalls run 2 to 3 a year from 2020 to 2025, mostly for the backup camera and engine cooling. CarsCounsel (opens in a new tab) publishes a year-by-year guide for buyers weighing the S90's model years.
Buying an S90 now
With U.S. production ending, a new S90 will become harder to find, and a used one is the more likely purchase going forward. Check the VIN for the electrical and backup camera campaigns that appear across most model years, and confirm dealer stock before assuming a 2026 S90 is available new.

Background and safety record
What public sources say about the Volvo S90.
The Volvo S90 is an executive sedan manufactured and marketed by Swedish automaker Volvo Cars from 2016. Its estate variant is called the Volvo V90.
- Safety
- The S90 was one of the IIHS's Top Safety Picks for 2017, 2018, 2019, and earned Top Safety Pick+ in 2021, 2022 and 2023.
- Models
- For the model year of 2017 (the first model year), a short and long wheelbase sedan as well as an estate model were made available. For 2017, the short wheelbase model was sold in North America and Europe, while the long wheelbase model was primarily sold in China.
- Production
- By mid-2017, the Swedish Torslandaverken Plant no longer produced the S90. Production and assembly has mainly moved to the Chinese Daqing plant. Models were shipped to Europe from China by train.
- Engines
- The S90 is only available with 2.0-litre, four-cylinder petrol and diesel engines from the VEA family (Drive-E). The more powerful petrol engines are compound charged, as is the plug-in hybrid variant called the T8. The D5 diesel engine features Volvo's new PowerPulse technology that is designed to eliminate turbo lag, as well as an i Art injection system.

Method: recall counts and their affected components come from the NHTSA Office of Defects Investigation: Recalls API, queried by exact make, model and model year. Complaint counts come from the NHTSA Office of Defects Investigation: Complaints API, same query pattern. Data pulled 2026-09-04.
Known gap: the NHTSA complaints API did not return data for Volvo S90 model years 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024, 2025 when queried for this page: the request itself failed upstream, not returning a genuine zero. Those years are marked "not available" above instead of shown as clean; recall counts for those years are unaffected and come from the separate recalls API, which returned data for every year listed.
Check open recalls by VIN for one particular vehicle.
Q01Is there a best year to buy a Volvo S90?
Federal recall records don't single out a best Volvo S90 model year: recall counts across the 10 published model years checked here stay within a normal range of this nameplate's own average (about 2.8 recalls per year), with no year standing out as notably higher or lower. Recall count is one input, not a purchase verdict. It says nothing about a specific vehicle's price, mileage, accident history or maintenance record.
Q02What are common recall-related problems on the Volvo S90 by model year?
2025: backup camera, visibility/wipers. 2024: backup camera. 2023: backup camera, engine cooling. 2022: backup camera, engine cooling. 2021: brakes, electrical system. 2020: electrical system, forward collision system.
Q03Why do some Volvo S90 model years show "not available" for complaints?
The NHTSA complaints API did not return data for Volvo S90 model years 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024, 2025 when queried for this page: the request itself failed upstream instead of the count genuinely being zero. Recall counts for those years are unaffected; they come from a separate NHTSA endpoint that returned data for every year listed.
