Toyota Mirai
Car and Driver says the Toyota Mirai is a rolling chemistry experiment that, unlike most other EVs, doesn't need to be plugged into an external energy source, using an onboard fuel cell to convert hydrogen into electricity for up to 402 miles of emissions-free driving per the EPA, with a single 182-hp electric motor giving sloth-like acceleration redeemed by a refined ride and lively handling, though there are few hydrogen fueling stations outside of California, keeping it a region-locked niche product. MotorTrend says Toyota has long held hydrogen as a potential eco-friendly alternative to all-electric vehicles, and taken on its own the Mirai is a good car with elegant design and enjoyable, refined driving, but the Mirai's reliance on hydrogen fuel is the worst thing about it, since even in California, the only state where it's sold, refueling options are few and becoming fewer while EV infrastructure improves and hybrid options are plentiful; for 2026 Toyota disavows trim levels entirely and sells it simply as the Mirai.
A rolling chemistry experiment, not a plug-in EV

Background and safety record
What public sources say about the Toyota Mirai.
The Toyota Mirai (from mirai, Japanese for 'future') is a mid-size hydrogen fuel cell vehicle (FCV) manufactured by Toyota, and is the first FCV to be mass-produced and sold commercially. The Mirai was unveiled at the November 2014 Los Angeles Auto Show. As of November 2022, global sales totaled 21,475 units; the top-selling markets were the U.S. with 11,368 units, Japan with 7,435 and the rest of the world with 2,622.
- Safety
- At Toyota's Higashi-Fuji Technical Center, the Mirai has been subjected to extensive crash testing to evaluate a design specifically intended to address frontal, side and rear impacts and to provide claimed excellent protection of vehicle occupants. A high level of collision safety has also been achieved to help protect the fuel cell stack and high-pressure tanks against body deformation.

Q01Is there a best year to buy a Toyota Mirai?
Federal recall records don't single out a best Toyota Mirai model year: recall counts across the 5 published model years checked here stay within a normal range of this nameplate's own average (about 1.4 recalls per year), with no year standing out as notably higher or lower. Recall count is one input, not a purchase verdict. It says nothing about a specific vehicle's price, mileage, accident history or maintenance record.
Q02What are common recall-related problems on the Toyota Mirai by model year?
2025: backup camera. 2024: backup camera, electrical system. 2023: backup camera. 2022: stability control. 2021: stability control.
