What changed on the 2018 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Carvana (opens in a new tab) and GM Authority (opens in a new tab) describe 2018 as a light update before the 2019 redesign: the biggest change is a standard rearview camera with guidance lines on every trim, joined by Tire Fill Alert and Teen Driver mode as standard. The Work Truck gains a standard 7-inch touchscreen, Bluetooth and a six-speaker audio system, the eAssist mild-hybrid expands to LT and LTZ nationwide, the Custom trim adds a Crew Cab, and Cajun Red Metallic and Havana Metallic are new colors.

There are no new engines: a 4.3-liter V6, 5.3-liter V8 and 6.2-liter V8 continue. Kelley Blue Book (opens in a new tab) lists power from 285 horsepower on the LS to 355 on the High Country.

Recalls and problems owners report

NHTSA lists 12 recall campaigns across the 2018 Silverado line. Four (24V756000, 25V432000, 26V166000 and 26V325000) cover roof-rail air bag inflators whose end cap may detach or sidewall may rupture, with dealers replacing the modules. 19V645000 and 20V603000 cover brake vacuum pumps whose output can decrease over time, 19V761000 covers a wheel-speed sensor failure that can trigger unwanted ABS activation, and 17V567000 covers front seat belt retractors with the wrong torsion bar on 2500 and 3500 trucks.

The rest affect heavy-duty and dual-tank trucks: 19V328000 and 21V496000 for Duramax diesel block heater cords, 23V047000 for a collapsing rear tank on dual-tank diesels, and 19V088000 for a fuel-level sensor on dual-tank 3500 gas trucks. Owners have filed 597 complaints, led by power train with 181, engine with 122, electrical system with 121 and service brakes with 103. ProblemsByVin (opens in a new tab) and CarFactBase (opens in a new tab) break them down, and ChevyGuide (opens in a new tab) covers recurring transmission and engine noise reports.

2018 Silverado against the Ram 1500 and Tundra

EPA rates the 2018 Silverado at 17 to 20 mpg combined and $3,100 to $4,550 a year in fuel. The Ram 1500 lists 14 to 23 at $3,100 to $5,100 and the Toyota Tundra 14 to 16 at $3,900 to $4,450. The Silverado beats the Tundra and trails the Ram's best version.
