About the brand
About Chrysler.
Chrysler is an American brand of automobiles and a division owned by Stellantis North America. The automaker was founded in 1925 by Walter Chrysler from the remains of the Maxwell Motor Company. The brand primarily focused on building luxury vehicles as the broader Chrysler Corporation expanded, following a strategy of brand diversification and hierarchy largely adopted from General Motors.
- History
- The first Chrysler cars were introduced on January 5, 1924, at the New York Automobile Show – one year before Chrysler Corporation itself was created. These cars, launched by Maxwell Motors, had a new high-compression six-cylinder, a seven-bearing crankshaft, carburetor air cleaner, replaceable oil filter, and four-wheel hydraulic brakes. Features like this had never been offered in a medium-priced car before, and the 32,000 first-year record sales proved the popularity of this model.
- Lineup
- Chrysler's lineup has narrowed sharply from its historical range of sedans, minivans and the rear-wheel-drive 300 into essentially one model today: the Pacifica minivan, which also underpins the Chrysler Voyager as a lower-trim variant sold alongside it. The Chrysler 300, a rear-wheel-drive full-size sedan available with V6 and HEMI V8 power, was discontinued after the 2023 model year without a direct replacement, leaving Chrysler as the smallest full-line brand within Stellantis. Chrysler pioneered the modern minivan segment with the original 1984 Dodge Caravan/Plymouth Voyager/Chrysler Town & Country platform, and the Pacifica, which replaced the Town & Country in 2017, continues that lineage as one of the only minivans still offered with a plug-in hybrid powertrain (the Pacifica Hybrid) alongside its standard gas V6. Chrysler was also an early adopter of connected-car technology, introducing its Uconnect infotainment and Wi-Fi hotspot system across the brand and its Stellantis siblings — Dodge, Jeep and Ram — starting in the mid-2000s, though a well-publicized 2015 security disclosure showed early Uconnect-equipped Jeeps could be remotely hacked to control steering, brakes and the transmission, prompting a security overhaul across the platform.
