Method: each model’s average is computed from the same NHTSA Office of Defects Investigation: Recalls API model-year data shown on that model’s own hub, queried by exact make, model and model year. Data pulled 2026-09-04. Models with fewer than 3 published model years of recall data are excluded from this comparison.

Q01Which GMC models have the most federal recalls?

Across the 4 GMC nameplates checked here, recall rates stay within a normal range of each other (about 3.2 recalls per model-year on average), with no single model standing out as notably higher or lower. Recall count is one input, not a purchase verdict.

About the brand

About GMC.

GMC is a division of American automotive manufacturer General Motors (GM) for trucks and utility vehicles. GMC currently makes SUVs, pickup trucks, vans, and light-duty trucks. In the past, GMC also produced fire trucks, ambulances, heavy-duty trucks, military vehicles, motorhomes, transit buses, and medium duty trucks.

History
Roots to the GMC brand can be traced to 1900, when the Grabowsky Motor Company was established by brothers Max (1874-1946) and Morris Grabowsky, in Detroit, and renamed Rapid Motor Vehicle Company in 1902, when the brothers moved operations to Pontiac, Michigan. Durant gained control of Rapid Motor Vehicle Company and made it a subsidiary of his General Motors Company. In 1909, 300 vehicles were produced by Grabowsky.
Lineup
GMC traces to 1912, when General Motors merged the Rapid and Reliance truck makers into General Motors Truck Company and adopted the GMC name; the brand built its early reputation on long-distance durability demonstrations, including a 1916 Seattle-to-New York crossing and a 1926 coast-to-coast run made in just over five days. GMC trucks saw heavy military use in both World Wars, supplying more than 8,500 trucks to the U.S. government in World War I and 600,000 during World War II. Today GMC builds mechanically similar trucks and SUVs to Chevrolet's Silverado, Colorado, Equinox, Traverse, Tahoe and Suburban — the Sierra, Canyon, Terrain, Acadia, Yukon and Yukon XL — but positions them above their Chevrolet counterparts as GM's "professional grade" brand, with more standard equipment and available Denali and higher AT4 off-road trims. GMC also carries the revived Hummer name as an electric sub-brand, with the Hummer EV pickup and SUV built as GM's flagship electric off-roaders, extending the brand's truck-first identity into the EV era rather than launching Hummer as a separate standalone company again.
