Hyundai Tucson

The Hyundai Tucson is a compact crossover made since 2004, and the 2016 is its clear problem year: 1,616 complaints that guides tie to its seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, plus 5 recalls, followed by the 2017 with 1,083. The 2026 Tucson starts at $31,050, and the latest generation is offered as a hybrid and plug-in rated up to 38 mpg combined.

What the Hyundai Tucson is and who buys it

Wikipedia (opens in a new tab) describes the Tucson as a compact crossover SUV made by Hyundai since 2004, named after the city of Tucson, Arizona, and sold in some markets as the ix35 from 2009 to 2015. CarGurus (opens in a new tab) covers four generations, and says the current fourth-generation Tucson debuted for the 2022 model year. The 2026 Tucson offers a 2.5L four-cylinder, a 1.6L hybrid and a 1.6L plug-in hybrid, rated 26 to 38 mpg combined by the EPA, about $1,650 to $2,400 a year in fuel. Kelley Blue Book base prices start at $31,050 for the SE and reach $35,400 for the SEL Premium.

Best and worst Tucson model years

Federal data makes 2016 stand out. It has 1,616 complaints, the most of any year, and 5 recalls covering the powertrain, electrical system, exterior lighting and door latches, and the 2017 has 1,083 complaints and 3 recalls including the engine. Every year from 2018 to 2021 has just 1 recall, for brakes, and complaints fall from 391 to 78. The 2022 has 3 recalls and 379 complaints, the 2023 has 2, the 2024 has 4, and the 2025 has 6 recalls and 278 complaints, covering the electrical system, engine cooling and air bags.

Guides agree on the reason. MotorJury (opens in a new tab) says the third-generation Tucson launched for 2016 with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission on the 1.6-liter turbo, and that transmission is the reason the 2016 carries 1,616 complaints: hesitation from a standstill, jerking and loss of drive. It scores the 2016 at 37 out of 100 and the 2021 at 89. REREV (opens in a new tab) says the worst years are 2016 and 2017 and that Hyundai recalled 2016 Tucsons with the 7-speed DCT. CarMerit (opens in a new tab) recommends the 2019 to 2021 six-speed automatic range as a simpler starting point because it avoids the earlier DCT, and flags the 2017 2.0 GDI without recall 209. Open the 2016 Tucson page for that year's recalls.

Older years

Daily Car Tips (opens in a new tab) says to avoid 2011, 2012 and 2013 for Theta II engine failures and 2016 and 2017 for the transmission problems, and says the 2017 also got caught in another Theta II engine recall. Check the exact engine, transmission and VIN recall status for any Tucson from 2010 to 2021.

Questions buyers ask

Which Hyundai Tucson years should I avoid?

REREV (opens in a new tab) says the worst years are 2016 and 2017, and MotorJury ties the 2016's 1,616 complaints to the seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.

Does the Hyundai Tucson come as a hybrid?

Yes. The 2026 Tucson offers a 1.6L hybrid and a 1.6L plug-in hybrid alongside the 2.5L gas engine.

Recent recalls (12 campaigns across the latest model years)

  • June 2026, Electrical System: Instrument Cluster/Panel. Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain 2025-2026 Tucson, Tucson Hybrid, Tucson Plug-In Hybrid Electric (PHEV) vehicles. Due to a software error, the instrument panel display may fail. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle… Consequence: An instrument panel display that fails to show critical safety information, such as the speedometer or warning lights, increases the risk of a crash.
  • May 2026, Forward Collision Avoidance: Automatic Emergency Braking. Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain 2025-2026 Santa Cruz, Tucson, Tucson Hybrid, and Tucson Plug-In Hybrid Electric (PHEV) vehicles. Software in the front cameras may cause the forward collision avoidance system to activate prematurely and unexpectedly apply the brakes. Consequence: Unexpected braking increases the risk of a crash.
  • April 2026, Air Bags:Sensor:Side Impact. Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain 2025 Elantra N, 2026 Tucson, Tucson Hybrid, Tucson Plug-In Hybrid Electric (PHEV), and Elantra vehicles. The B-pillar impact sensors may have been misassembled, which can delay air bag deployment. Consequence: Air bags that do not deploy as intended increase the risk of injury in a crash.

Owners filed 283 complaints with NHTSA for the 2025 Hyundai Tucson, most often about forward collision avoidance (148), electrical system (63), unknown or other (57).

Method: recall counts and their affected components come from the NHTSA Office of Defects Investigation: Recalls API, queried by exact make, model and model year. Complaint counts come from the NHTSA Office of Defects Investigation: Complaints API, same query pattern. Data pulled 2026-09-04.

Known gap: the NHTSA complaints API did not return data for Hyundai Tucson model year 2026 when queried for this page: the request itself failed upstream, not returning a genuine zero. Those years are marked "not available" above instead of shown as clean; recall counts for those years are unaffected and come from the separate recalls API, which returned data for every year listed.

Check open recalls by VIN for one particular vehicle.

Q01Is there a best year to buy a Hyundai Tucson?

Recall count alone can't answer that: it says nothing about a specific vehicle's price, mileage, accident history or maintenance record. What federal data can say: 2026, 2025, 2016 carried more. See the model-year table on this page for the exact counts and what they cover.

Q02Which Hyundai Tucson model years should I watch for recalls?

The 2026 Hyundai Tucson has 5 federal recalls on file, most commonly affecting electrical system, engine cooling, airbags; The 2025 Hyundai Tucson has 6 federal recalls on file, most commonly affecting electrical system, equipment, engine cooling; The 2016 Hyundai Tucson has 5 federal recalls on file, most commonly affecting powertrain, electrical system, exterior lighting. Always confirm the open/completed status of every campaign for the specific VIN: a recall on this list may already be repaired on the vehicle in front of you.

Q03What are common recall-related problems on the Hyundai Tucson by model year?

2026: electrical system, engine cooling, airbags, forward collision system. 2025: electrical system, equipment, engine cooling, airbags. 2024: equipment, powertrain, steering, trailer hitch. 2023: powertrain, trailer hitch. 2022: electrical system, structure, trailer hitch. 2021: brakes.

Q04Why do some Hyundai Tucson model years show "not available" for complaints?

The NHTSA complaints API did not return data for Hyundai Tucson model year 2026 when queried for this page: the request itself failed upstream instead of the count genuinely being zero. Recall counts for those years are unaffected; they come from a separate NHTSA endpoint that returned data for every year listed.
