What changed on the 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class

Car and Driver (opens in a new tab) says that other than new no-cost metallic paint colors the GLE rolls into 2023 with no changes, that stepping up to the GLE 450 brings standard all-wheel drive and a 362-horsepower powertrain of a turbocharged inline-six and a 48-volt hybrid system, and that while BMW and Volvo include three years of maintenance in the price of a new X5 or XC90, Mercedes offers none. MotorTrend (opens in a new tab) adds that all models have a nine-speed automatic and standard all-wheel drive except the base GLE 350, which is rear-drive, and that ruling out the base trim puts the effective starting price near $65,000.

KBB lists fuel economy from 16/21 to 20/25 mpg city and highway, and EPA rates the 2023 GLE at 17 to 22 mpg combined and $3,500 to $4,550 a year in fuel.

Recalls and problems owners report

NHTSA lists four recall campaigns for the 2023 GLE. 23V178000 covers rear door window trim bars that may detach from the vehicle while driving, and dealers inspect and secure them as necessary. 23V880000 is a fuel pump campaign shared with several other Mercedes models, 24V207000 covers wiring on GLE, GLS and other models, and 24V118000 covers transmission control software that may let a GLE 450 stall by not fully downshifting. Owners have filed 32 complaints with NHTSA: power train with 9, unknown or other with 8, forward collision avoidance with 6, and structure, electrical system and vehicle speed control with 4 each. ProblemsByVin (opens in a new tab) scores the year 8.4 out of 10, above the segment average, with no systemic severe-failure pattern, and CarFactBase (opens in a new tab) quotes an owner whose GLE showed a battery warning followed by a coolant-too-hot warning and shut down on the road.

What a 2023 GLE costs today

Kelley Blue Book (opens in a new tab) lists used 2023 GLE prices from $38,000 for the GLE 350 to $59,100 for the GLE 580 4MATIC at a dealership, with trade-in values of about $30,700 to $51,100 and private-party values of about $36,200 to $56,300.

2023 GLE against the X5, Q7, RX and XC90

EPA rates the 2023 GLE at 17 to 22 mpg combined and $3,500 to $4,550 a year in fuel. The 2023 BMW X5 rates 15 to 23 at $3,350 to $5,150, the Audi Q7 20 to 21 at $3,700 to $3,900, the Lexus RX 24 to 36 at $2,150 to $3,250 and the Volvo XC90 22 to 27 at $2,850 to $3,500. On EPA figures the GLE is less efficient than the RX and XC90, and the RX, with its hybrid, is the most efficient of the five.
