2024 Porsche Taycan

Car and Driver (opens in a new tab) says the 2024 Taycan enters its fifth model year largely unchanged, with the most powerful Taycan Turbo S packing 750 horsepower and all models capable of DC fast charging at up to 270 kW. It also notes that the EPA estimates the furthest-driving Taycan is good for 246 miles, which does not threaten even the least-efficient Lucid Air's estimated 384 miles between charges. MotorTrend (opens in a new tab) says the 2024 Taycan returns with only minor changes ahead of a major update the following year.

That update matters to a used buyer. Porsche's newsroom (opens in a new tab) says the new generation has more power, more range, quicker acceleration and faster, more stable charging, with a real-world range of up to 587 kilometres, so the 2024 is the last of the original version and the newer car is the one to wait for if range and charging speed matter to you.

NHTSA lists six campaigns. Two concern the high-voltage battery. 24V217 covers 2020 to 2024 Taycan 4S, Turbo, GTS, Cross Turismo and Sport Turismo variants where the high-voltage battery may experience a short circuit within the battery modules, and 24V732 covers 2021 to 2024 Taycans where the battery may short-circuit within a module; Porsche says a short circuit increases the risk of fire. 24V455 covers the front brake hoses on 2020 to 2025 Taycans, which can develop cracks and leak brake fluid, extending stopping distance. 24V654 covers headlight control module software that may leave the parking lights not working as intended when the turn signals are on. 23V841 concerns the charging cable overheating on some home outlets at the 100 percent charge setting, and 25V896 the rearview camera image not displaying in reverse.

Every campaign applies to a range of build dates and trims, so get the VIN checked at nhtsa.gov/recalls, and ask the selling dealer for both battery-module recall completions in writing.

Owners have filed only nine complaints with NHTSA on the 2024 Taycan: electrical system six, unclassified four, forward collision avoidance two, and one each for visibility, service brakes and hydraulic problems. ProblemsByVin (opens in a new tab) and CarFactBase (opens in a new tab) both count nine complaints and six recalls, and CarFactBase notes no published NHTSA overall rating. A count that low reflects a low-volume car more than a reliability verdict, so the recalls are the better guide to what to check.

CarBuzz (opens in a new tab) lists the 2024 Taycan 4S at a $111,700 MSRP and the GTS at $139,300, against an average used price of $71,451 across 24 listings. Kelley Blue Book (opens in a new tab) puts the current resale value at $67,600 and the trade-in value at $60,500, and the car in the 25th to 75th percentile for depreciation among 2024 sedans. So a two-year-old Taycan sells for about 64 percent of a new 4S's sticker, which is where the value is.

The Taycan's 75 to 83 MPGe combined and $900 to $1,000 a year in fuel on fueleconomy.gov (opens in a new tab) compares with 96 to 122 MPGe and $600 to $800 for the 2024 Tesla Model S, so the Model S is the more efficient car and runs $200 to $300 a year cheaper. What the Taycan offers in return is the 750-horsepower Turbo S and its 270 kW charging speed. Choose the Taycan for driving character and the Model S for running cost.
