Toyota Land Cruiser
The Toyota Land Cruiser is Toyota's longest-running model, on sale worldwide since 1951, and it left the U.S. after the 2021 model year before returning for 2024 as a hybrid-only SUV with a smaller footprint and a price cut of roughly $30,000 from the old model's $85,515 start. CarsCounsel says buyers should not avoid specific years but instead avoid neglected examples of older generations, and Gear Tech Guy names 1991-1997 and 2006-2007 as consensus best years. The 2026 Land Cruiser starts at $59,095.
What the Toyota Land Cruiser is
Wikipedia (opens in a new tab) describes the Land Cruiser as a series of four-wheel-drive vehicles made by Toyota since 1951, its longest-running series of models, with worldwide sales totaling more than 10 million. The 2026 Land Cruiser has a 2.4L turbo four-cylinder hybrid with four-wheel drive, rated 23 mpg combined by the EPA at about $3,350 a year in fuel, and Kelley Blue Book base prices are $59,095 for the 1958 trim and $63,940 for the Base Style.
The 2021 gap and 2024 return
Carscoops (opens in a new tab) says the Land Cruiser waved goodbye to America at the end of the 2021 model year and made a triumphant return in 2024, with a boxy, retro-inspired design following the 2024 Lexus GX. It says the 2021 Land Cruiser began at $85,515, so the redesigned SUV costs roughly $30,000 less than its predecessor. Green Car Reports (opens in a new tab) says the 2024 Land Cruiser debuted with a turbocharged hybrid powertrain, a smaller footprint and a lower price than the last version, which was discontinued after 2021.
Best and worst Land Cruiser model years
Federal data shows the 2015 Land Cruiser with 4 recalls, the most of any recent year, and 2 complaints, with 1 to 3 recalls a year through 2019, then no recalls from 2020 to 2023 during the U.S. gap, 1 recall on the 2024 return year, and none on the 2025.
CarsCounsel (opens in a new tab) says that instead of avoiding specific years, buyers must avoid neglected examples of older generations. Gear Tech Guy (opens in a new tab) says the consensus among fans and mechanics points to 1991 to 1997 (80 Series) and 2006 to 2007 (100 Series) as the best Land Cruiser years for a mix of reliability, comfort and long-term value. Toyoland (opens in a new tab) notes these are vehicles owners keep for twenty years and 300,000 miles, which changes the math of choosing one: a weak model year is not a three-year lease mistake, it is a decades-long relationship with the wrong truck.

Background and safety record
What public sources say about the Toyota Land Cruiser.
The Toyota Land Cruiser, also sometimes spelt as LandCruiser, is a series of four-wheel drive vehicles produced by the Japanese automobile manufacturer Toyota. It is Toyota's longest running series of models. As of 2019, the sales of the Land Cruiser totalled more than 10 million units worldwide.
- Development
- In January 1998, the 100 series Land Cruiser was introduced to replace the eight-year-old 80 series. The 100 series was previewed in October 1997 as the "Grand Cruiser" at the 32nd Tokyo Motor Show. Development began in 1991 under code name 404T, with the final design being frozen in mid-1994.
- Specifications
- The 100 models were fitted with a slightly wider chassis, independent front suspension (IFS) and two new engines. The change to IFS was a first for a Land Cruiser, and was made (in combination with rack-and-pinion steering) to improve on-road handling.
- Sales
- Owing to its durability and reliability, the Land Cruiser, along with the smaller Toyota Hilux, has become popular among military forces and used as a military light utility vehicle. The vehicles are also popular with militant groups in war-torn regions.

Method: recall counts and their affected components come from the NHTSA Office of Defects Investigation: Recalls API, queried by exact make, model and model year. Complaint counts come from the NHTSA Office of Defects Investigation: Complaints API, same query pattern. Data pulled 2026-09-04.
Known gap: the NHTSA complaints API did not return data for Toyota Land Cruiser model year 2024 when queried for this page: the request itself failed upstream, not returning a genuine zero. Those years are marked "not available" above instead of shown as clean; recall counts for those years are unaffected and come from the separate recalls API, which returned data for every year listed.

Q01Is there a best year to buy a Toyota Land Cruiser?
Federal recall records don't single out a best Toyota Land Cruiser model year: recall counts across the 6 published model years checked here stay within a normal range of this nameplate's own average (about 2.3 recalls per year), with no year standing out as notably higher or lower. Recall count is one input, not a purchase verdict. It says nothing about a specific vehicle's price, mileage, accident history or maintenance record.
Q02What are common recall-related problems on the Toyota Land Cruiser by model year?
2024: equipment. 2019: fuel system, airbags, equipment. 2018: fuel system, airbags. 2017: airbags. 2016: airbags, tires. 2015: airbags, equipment, fuel system.
Q03Why do some Toyota Land Cruiser model years show "not available" for complaints?
The NHTSA complaints API did not return data for Toyota Land Cruiser model year 2024 when queried for this page: the request itself failed upstream instead of the count genuinely being zero. Recall counts for those years are unaffected; they come from a separate NHTSA endpoint that returned data for every year listed.
