2022 Toyota Mirai
The 2022 Toyota Mirai carries over unchanged, a rear-drive hydrogen fuel-cell sedan with a maximum range of 402 miles that stores hydrogen at 10,000 psi in three tanks. It has one recall and 10 NHTSA complaints. Its value has collapsed: Kelley Blue Book says it has lost 80 percent in three years and puts resale value at about $4,525.
What the 2022 Toyota Mirai is
Car and Driver (opens in a new tab) says the Mirai carries over into 2022 with no changes, and that its design looks like it rolled straight out of a future where boxy SUVs are passé. Kelley Blue Book (opens in a new tab) says a full Mirai has a maximum range of 402 miles, that hydrogen is stored under high pressure of 10,000 psi in three tanks, and that an 8-year, 100,000-mile warranty on fuel cell and drivetrain components plus a 10-year, 150,000-mile battery warranty should quell misgivings. The EPA's combined rating for the 2022 Mirai is 65 to 74 MPGe.
Recall and complaints
NHTSA lists one recall on the 2022 Mirai, 22V239, an electronic stability control campaign shared with several Toyota and Lexus models. The 10 owner complaints break down as forward collision avoidance 6, electrical system 3, engine 2, fuel and propulsion 2, vehicle speed control 2 and lane departure 1, and ProblemsByVin (opens in a new tab) calls that a light NHTSA footprint. Few Mirais are on the road, so the reliability picture rests on a small sample.
Value: a car that costs little used
Kelley Blue Book (opens in a new tab) says a 2022 Mirai has depreciated $18,967, or 80 percent, in the last three years and has a current resale value of $4,525 and a trade-in value of $3,700, in the 75th to 100th percentile for depreciation among 2022 sedans. It also says the range-topping Mirai Limited starts at $11,200 today, originally priced from $67,025. Fuel is the other cost: H2FCP (opens in a new tab) reports the average price of hydrogen for a light-duty fuel cell passenger car in California was $16.51 a kilogram in the 2019 Joint Agency Report. Before you buy a used Mirai, check that a hydrogen station is close to where you live and work.
