2026 Volvo EX90

The 2026 Volvo EX90 is the year Volvo fixed its three-row electric SUV after a difficult launch, moving from a 400-volt to an 800-volt electrical system for faster charging and adding a new central computer to fix the software problems. The EPA rates it 300 to 310 miles of range, and prices start at slightly more than $81,000.

What changed on the 2026 Volvo EX90

MotorTrend (opens in a new tab) says that following a difficult launch the EX90 gets notable upgrades for 2026, promising improved tech and faster charging. The major change is a shift from 400-volt to 800-volt electrical architecture, which should significantly improve charging: MotorTrend measured the 2025 model gaining 94 miles in the first 15 minutes and 172 miles after 30 minutes, both mediocre results. To remedy the software and technology issues that shaped the EX90's early reputation, Volvo equips the SUV with a new central computer. The EX90 is EPA rated for between 300 and 310 miles depending on wheels, and a model with 22-inch wheels covered 247 miles in MotorTrend's Road-Trip Range test.

The 2026 EX90 starts at slightly more than $81,000 in Plus trim, which includes 20-inch wheels, a 14.5-inch touchscreen, backlit wood trim, a 17-speaker audio system, five-passenger seating and a power tailgate. Kelley Blue Book's base prices on this site's data run from $78,090 for the Single Motor Plus to about $86,400 for the Twin Motor Performance Plus. CarBuzz (opens in a new tab) lists the Single Motor Plus 7-Seater at a $76,695 MSRP and the Twin Motor Plus 7-Seater at $79,995, and puts the average price at $77,795 across 11 listings.

Recalls and software

EvSeekers (opens in a new tab) says NHTSA lists three EX90 recalls, for seat bolts, headlight shutter software and the power tailgate, all for 2025 models, and that the headlight recall is the one most tied to the software problem. It says the 2026 model year arrived with the new computer, the 800-volt system and more power, and advises buying a 2026 or newer EX90, or a 2025 that has the new computer installed and every software update applied. It also quotes one owner on software version 1.3.18 who still had the problem after Volvo's spokesperson said that update should have mostly solved the key issues. ProblemsByVin (opens in a new tab) declines to issue a buy-or-avoid verdict on the 2026 without a meaningful complaint sample.

2026 EX90 against the Kia EV9 and Rivian R1S

The EX90 rates 86 to 98 MPGe combined and $800 to $900 a year in electricity on fueleconomy.gov (opens in a new tab), against 78 to 89 MPGe and $850 to $950 for the 2026 Kia EV9 and 67 to 85 MPGe and $900 to $1,150 for the Rivian R1S, so it is the most efficient of the three.
