Mercedes-Benz AMG GT
The Mercedes-AMG GT is a two-door sports car and grand tourer made since October 2014. CarsCounsel says to approach the 2016 and 2017 models carefully for early production recalls and first-year dual-clutch transmission calibration issues, and federal data confirms 2017 and 2018 with 5 recalls each, the most of any year. Automonitor says the 2020 to 2021 GT R represents the optimal choice for most buyers. The 2026 GT is rated 16 to 22 mpg combined.
What the Mercedes-AMG GT is
Wikipedia (opens in a new tab) describes the GT as a series of two-door sports cars from Mercedes-AMG, introduced on 9 September 2014 and unveiled to the public that October at the Paris Motor Show, built in Sindelfingen, Germany, in GT, GT S (2015-2020), GT C (2017-2021) and GT R (2017-2021) forms. The 2026 GT is offered with a 2.0L four-cylinder mild hybrid, a 3.0L six-cylinder mild hybrid or a 4.0L V8, rated 16 to 22 mpg combined by the EPA, about $3,500 to $4,850 a year in fuel.
Best and worst AMG GT model years
Federal data shows the 2016 GT with 2 recalls and 6 complaints, the 2017 with 5 recalls, the most of any year, and 1 complaint, and the 2018 with 5 recalls. The 2019 has 2, the 2020 has 4, and the 2021 has 2.
CarsCounsel (opens in a new tab) says buyers should approach the 2016 and 2017 models carefully due to early production recalls and first-year dual-clutch transmission calibration issues. Automonitor (opens in a new tab) says the best year depends on priorities, but that the 2020 to 2021 GT R represents the optimal choice for most buyers, and that the $8,000 to $15,000 price premium for later years is justified by improvements and future reliability considerations.
Choosing a year
The 2016 and 2017 need the most scrutiny for the dual-clutch transmission calibration issues CarsCounsel names, while a 2020 or 2021 GT R sits in the window Automonitor calls optimal.

Background and safety record
What public sources say about the Mercedes-Benz AMG GT.
The Mercedes-AMG GT is a series of 2-door sports cars produced by German automobile manufacturer Mercedes-AMG. The car was introduced on 9 September 2014 and was officially unveiled to the public in October 2014 at the Paris Motor Show. While not directly replacing the SLS AMG (competing in a different segment), it is the second sports car developed entirely in-house by Mercedes-AMG.
- Variants
- The GT S was the Formula 1 safety car for the 2015, 2016 and 2017 seasons, having made its debut in that role at the 2015 Australian Grand Prix. The GT R was used as F1's safety car from 2018 to 2021. The Black Series was used as F1's safety car from 2022 to 2026.
- Motorsport
- In March 2015, Mercedes-AMG presented the AMG GT3, a race version of the GT, at the Geneva Motor Show, which employs the M159 6,208 cc (378.8 cu in) V8 naturally aspirated engine also used in the SLS AMG GT3.

Method: recall counts and their affected components come from the NHTSA Office of Defects Investigation: Recalls API, queried by exact make, model and model year. Complaint counts come from the NHTSA Office of Defects Investigation: Complaints API, same query pattern. Data pulled 2026-09-04.
Known gap: the NHTSA complaints API did not return data for Mercedes-Benz AMG GT model years 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021 when queried for this page: the request itself failed upstream, not returning a genuine zero. Those years are marked "not available" above instead of shown as clean; recall counts for those years are unaffected and come from the separate recalls API, which returned data for every year listed.
Check open recalls by VIN for one particular vehicle.
Q01Is there a best year to buy a Mercedes-Benz AMG GT?
Federal recall records don't single out a best Mercedes-Benz AMG GT model year: recall counts across the 6 published model years checked here stay within a normal range of this nameplate's own average (about 3.3 recalls per year), with no year standing out as notably higher or lower. Recall count is one input, not a purchase verdict. It says nothing about a specific vehicle's price, mileage, accident history or maintenance record.
Q02What are common recall-related problems on the Mercedes-Benz AMG GT by model year?
2021: stability control, electrical system. 2020: electrical system, exterior lighting, Communication. 2019: electrical system. 2018: electrical system, powertrain, airbags, seat belts. 2017: powertrain, Communication, electrical system, airbags. 2016: powertrain.
Q03Why do some Mercedes-Benz AMG GT model years show "not available" for complaints?
The NHTSA complaints API did not return data for Mercedes-Benz AMG GT model years 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021 when queried for this page: the request itself failed upstream instead of the count genuinely being zero. Recall counts for those years are unaffected; they come from a separate NHTSA endpoint that returned data for every year listed.
