What changed on the 2019 Toyota Corolla

Carvana (opens in a new tab) says the Corolla sedan carries over with no major changes before its 2020 redesign, while the new hatchback brings a five-door body, Toyota's newer small-car platform, a 2.0-liter engine, Apple CarPlay and Toyota Safety Sense 2.0, an updated driver-assist suite; satellite radio changes from standard to optional on the SE. MotorTrend (opens in a new tab) expected the sedan to receive minimal changes in preparation for the 2020 redesign, with the standard 6.1-inch touchscreen returning and an optional 7.0-inch screen.

Car and Driver (opens in a new tab) calls the hatchback completely redesigned on an all-new platform that kicks off the next-generation models, and notes the sedan generation had been around for several years with only a light refresh of styling in 2017. KBB lists 28/36 to 30/40 mpg city and highway, and EPA rates the 2019 Corolla at 30 to 36 mpg combined and $1,750 to $2,100 a year in fuel.

Recalls and problems owners report

NHTSA lists five recall campaigns for the 2019 Corolla. 18V901000 covers torque-converter pump-impeller blades that may detach under high load and stall the car, 20V012000 a fuel-pump recall expanded in March 2020 in which dealers replace the fuel pump, and 20V024000 an air-bag control module that can fail to behave correctly in certain crashes. The other two, 19V503000 and 19V244000, are load-capacity label campaigns.

Owners have filed 204 complaints with NHTSA on this model year: power train leads with 56, followed by engine with 39, unknown or other with 32, and air bags and fuel and propulsion system with 31 each. Consumer Reports (opens in a new tab) rates the 2019 Corolla much more reliable than other cars from the same model year, and notes the CVT recall on hatchback models.

What a 2019 Corolla costs today

Kelley Blue Book (opens in a new tab) lists the cheapest 2019 Corolla, the L sedan, at a Fair Purchase Price of $14,050, with trade-in values of about $8,525 to $11,900 and private-party values of about $12,000 to $14,150 for the sedan, and somewhat higher figures for the hatchback, which KBB lists at trade-in values of about $11,550 to $13,550 and private-party values of about $14,250 to $15,800.

2019 Corolla against the Civic, Elantra and Sentra

EPA rates the 2019 Corolla at 30 to 36 mpg combined and $1,750 to $2,100 a year in fuel. The 2019 Honda Civic rates 25 to 36 at $1,750 to $3,100, the Hyundai Elantra 25 to 35 at $1,800 to $2,500 and the Nissan Sentra 27 to 32 at $1,950 to $2,850. On EPA figures the Corolla's range sits at the top of the four and its fuel-cost spread is the narrowest, because it is sold with few powertrain options.
