What changed on the 2023 Toyota Corolla

MotorTrend (opens in a new tab) says the sedan's ancient 1.8-liter engine is dropped, leaving the more powerful 2.0-liter four as the lone engine, and that LE models add a new rear bumper while the SE and XSE get a rear sport diffuser and 18-inch black wheels. Its model page (opens in a new tab) adds a standard updated 8.0-inch touchscreen, Toyota Safety Sense 3.0, and the new GR Corolla hot hatch with a 1.6-liter turbocharged three-cylinder making 300 hp and 273 lb-ft. The News Wheel (opens in a new tab) confirms Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 on every new Corolla.

Kelley Blue Book (opens in a new tab) puts the cheapest 2023 Corolla, the LE sedan, at a Fair Purchase Price of $19,400 and rates fuel economy at 31/40 to 32/41 mpg city and highway. EPA rates the 2023 Corolla family at 24 to 50 mpg or MPGe combined and $1,250 to $3,250 a year in fuel, with front- or all-wheel drive, the best figures belonging to the hybrid.

Recalls and problems owners report

NHTSA lists three recall campaigns for the 2023 Corolla. 23V480000 and 25V040000 cover an electrical connection inside the steering column's spiral cable assembly that may be insufficiently welded and deactivate the driver's air bag, the second covering vehicles that may have been incorrectly repaired under the first. 24V878000 covers 2023 to 2024 Corolla and Corolla Hybrid models whose steering intermediate shaft may fracture from manufacturing cracks and detach from the steering column, and dealers replace the shaft.

Owners have filed 73 complaints with NHTSA: unknown or other with 18, steering with 16, electrical system and engine with 13 each, and exterior lighting with 11. ProblemsByVin (opens in a new tab) counts the same 73, and CarComplaints (opens in a new tab) tracks the year's problems by category.
