About the brand
About Bugatti.
Automobiles Ettore Bugatti was a French manufacturer of high-performance automobiles. The company was founded in 1909 in the then-German city of Molsheim, Alsace, by the Italian-born industrial designer Ettore Bugatti. The cars were known for their design beauty and numerous race victories.
- Lineup
- The original Bugatti, founded in 1909 in Molsheim, built fewer than 8,000 cars in its lifetime but became famous for a handful of landmark models: the Type 35 Grand Prix racer, the Type 41 "Royale" ultra-luxury car, the Type 57 "Atlantic" coupe, and the Type 55 sports car, each prized as much for their design as for their racing success. Ettore Bugatti's engineering-plus-artistry approach reflected his family background — his father Carlo Bugatti was a noted Art Nouveau furniture designer — and carried through the brand's hand-finished engine blocks and body panels. The deaths of Ettore in 1947 and his son Jean in 1939, who would have led the company, left Bugatti without succession, and the marque struggled financially before being sold for its aircraft-parts business in 1963. An Italian entrepreneur revived the name in 1987 as Bugatti Automobili, and the historic brand name has since passed to Bugatti Rimac, the modern hypercar maker, in 2021.
- Design
- Bugatti models are known to focus on design. Engine blocks were hand scraped to ensure that the surfaces were flat so that gaskets were not required for sealing, and many of the exposed surfaces of the engine compartment featured guilloché finishes on them. Safety wires were threaded through most fasteners in intricately laced patterns.
