Midsize cars compared: all 37 current models side by side

The 37 current midsize cars in this table range from about $23,900 for the Hyundai Elantra to more than $140,000 for the BMW M8, and from 14 mpg for the BMW M5 to 127 MPGe for the electric Lexus ES. For most buyers the decision is which family sedan, and Kelley Blue Book's top pick for fuel economy in 2026 is the Toyota Camry, which now comes only as a hybrid.

How to choose a midsize car

A midsize car is judged on four things: purchase price, fuel economy, how big it feels inside and how it drives. On price, the table's base figures start with the Hyundai Elantra at $23,870 and the Mazda 3 at $25,885 and step up to $133,995 for the Audi RS 7 and $140,975 for the BMW M8, so this class holds both economy sedans and performance sedans and the price column is the quickest way to separate them. On efficiency, Kelley Blue Book (opens in a new tab) ranks the Toyota Camry first among the most fuel-efficient sedans of 2026 and describes it as a practical, safe and efficient midsize sedan with a standard hybrid powertrain and available all-wheel drive.

On value, the same site's sedan list describes the Kia K5 as a practical, affordable and high-tech midsize sedan with a sportier edge and more daring styling than most rivals, and the Nissan Altima as a bargain-priced midsize sedan with available all-wheel drive and comfortable seats, though its rivals are more modern. Open each model's page for the recall and complaint record, since a model that is cheap to buy can be expensive to keep.

Fuel economy and running cost

The class has the widest efficiency range on the site outside sports cars. At the top, the Lexus ES rates 127 MPGe, the Polestar 2 114 and the Tesla Model 3 111 on the EPA's combined scale, with annual electricity bills of $600 to $700 on the EPA's assumptions, while the BMW M5 rates 14 mpg and the Audi RS 7 16. A driver who covers average yearly mileage and can charge at home saves more than $1,000 a year moving from a performance sedan to an electric one. Hybrids sit between: the Camry is the value-priced way to cut fuel use without plugging in.

What the table does not show

Base prices and mpg say nothing about seat comfort, trunk size, safety scores or reliability, all of which differ between models at the same price. Before shortlisting, check the recall and complaint record on each model's page and confirm the exact configuration's rating on fueleconomy.gov, since a model's mpg range covers every engine and drivetrain it offers.
