Midsize and full-size SUVs compared: all 87 current models
The 87 SUVs in the EPA's standard class start at about $37,000 for the Jeep Cherokee and $39,000 for the Nissan Pathfinder and climb to more than $440,000 for the Rolls-Royce Cullinan, with fuel economy from 13 mpg to 118 MPGe. Most family buyers are choosing between a two-row midsize SUV, a three-row model, and an electric SUV such as the BMW iX3 or Audi Q4 e-tron that costs the least to fuel.
How to choose between two-row, three-row and electric SUVs
The class splits into three practical choices. A two-row midsize SUV is the value pick: Kelley Blue Book (opens in a new tab) names the Kia Sorento, from $33,885, the most affordable on its list of the best midsize SUVs. A three-row SUV adds seats; MotorTrend (opens in a new tab) notes that minivans are the most space-efficient vehicles for moving people and cargo, but their stigma has fostered a market for three-row SUVs of all sizes, and singles out the Dodge Durango as an outlier that combines available rear-wheel drive, strong towing capacity and sportiness. An electric SUV costs the most up front and the least to run, and on the EPA's numbers the BMW iX3 and Volvo EX60 (118 MPGe) and Audi Q4 e-tron (115 MPGe) rate best in the class.
Kelley Blue Book also says the all-new 2026 Hyundai Palisade improves on the strengths of its midsize three-row formula with more space, updated tech and a rugged new off-road trim.
Fuel economy and running cost in this class
The spread in this class is the largest of any: the BMW XM rates 14 mpg combined and the Rolls-Royce Cullinan 13, while the electric BMW iX3 and Volvo EX60 rate 118 MPGe and cost about $650 a year in electricity on the EPA's assumptions. Kelley Blue Book gives the Kia Sorento, at 26 mpg, as the most fuel-efficient vehicle on its midsize list, so gas SUVs in this class sit in the low-to-mid 20s.
Towing and payload do not show in the table, and they matter more in this class than in any other. Check the maker's rating for the exact engine and drivetrain, and read the model page's trim tables, because a maximum tow rating usually applies to one configuration.
Reliability: what U.S. News says is most dependable
U.S. News (opens in a new tab) puts the 2026 Cadillac XT5 first for predicted reliability, adds that it has the lowest starting price among luxury midsize SUVs, and says the Honda Passport was fully redesigned for 2026 and won its Best Midsize 2-Row SUV for Families award. Reliability lists differ by publisher, so open the model page of any SUV you are considering and read its recall and complaint record, then check a used vehicle's VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
